DURHAM, N.C. - Duke senior Rachael Moss and sophomore Sophia Dunworth were both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Volleyball Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
Moss earned her second straight appearance on the Academic All-District III First Team and her third appearance overall, while Dunworth appeared on the second team for the first time in her two-year career. Both Blue Devils have grade point averages over 3.80 and are significant pieces of a Duke team that is the defending ACC Champion and is currently in second place in the conference.
Moss, who ranks among Duke's top four in school history in both kills and digs, boasts a 3.94 GPA as a Political Science major. Also a second team Academic All-America selection in 2008, Moss is Duke's active leader with 1,569 kills, 1,446 digs, 156 service aces and 4,020 attacks. The 5-10 outside hitter from Cypress, Calif., has been one of the ACC's top players since her freshman year when she was named East Region Freshman of the Year. She has since gone on to receive All-ACC and All-East Region honors three times along with two AVCA All-America Honorable Mention citations.
Dunworth owns a 3.84 GPA as a sophomore and has not yet declared her major. A 6-1 sophomore, Dunworth is one of the ACC's top attackers, boasting a .294 hitting percentage with an average of 2.60 kills per game. A native of Pleasanton, Calif., Dunworth earned All-ACC Academic Volleyball honors last season along with an ACC All-Freshman Team citation.
The 2008 duo of Moss and Dunworth represents a strong academic tradition in the Duke volleyball program, which has placed at least one student-athlete on the last three Academic All-America teams.
