Men's Basketball Game Notes: at Georgia Tech, Jan. 10, 7 PM, ESPN

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke (13-2, 0-1), 11th in both the AP poll and ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, faces Georgia Tech (11-4, 0-2) on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with ESPN televising the contest.

Duke is coming off a 69-67 overtime loss to Virginia Tech in its ACC opener, while Georgia Tech is 0-2 in league play after falling to Clemson, 75-74, on Saturday. 

Junior DeMarcus Nelson paced the Blue Devils with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point distance. Nelson’s final trey came with 19 seconds remaining to force the overtime session. He also added five rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals in a career-high 39 minutes. 

Josh McRoberts posted his third double-double in the last four games with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He also added four assists and three blocks in the loss.

Freshmen Jon Scheyer and Gerald Henderson also reached double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Both players also grabbed four rebounds apiece.

Duke trailed 38-33 at the half before shooting 64.7 percent (11-of-17) in the second half en route to tying the game 64-64 at the end of regulation. McRoberts’ layup 10 seconds into overtime gave Duke the 66-64 lead, but the Blue Devils failed to make another field goal over the final 4:50 of the contest. Jamon Gordon’s high-arching floater in the lane with 30 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner for the Hokies.

The Blue Devils shot 48.9 percent (22-of-45) from the floor and outrebounded Virginia Tech, 37-29, but also suffered a season-high 22 turnovers in the loss.

Storylines

  • Duke leads the all-time series with Georgia Tech 57-21, including a 19-11 mark at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Blue Devils have won 20 of the last 21 meetings overall between the two schools. Mike Krzyzewski is 42-16 versus the Yellow Jackets with five straight wins.
  • Coach K owns a 264-116 record in conference regular season play, including a 115-74 mark in road games. His 264 career ACC wins is the second most in league history.
  • The Blue Devils dropped their ACC opener on Saturday versus Virginia Tech ending a string of 10 straight conference-opening victories. Duke has not lost two straight games to open the conference season since 1995-96.
  • The Blue Devils dropped their first four conference games of the 1995-96 ACC slate.
  • Duke is 159-36 (.815) outside of Cameron Indoor Stadium since the 1997-98 season, including a 78-19 (.804) mark in ACC play. The Blue Devils have won 55 of its last 72 ACC road contests.
  • Sophomore Josh McRoberts is the only player in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in rebounds (third - 8.1 rpg.), blocks (third - 2.67 bpg.), assists (seventh - 4.20 apg.), assist-to-turnover ratio (seventh - 1.85:1) and minutes played (sixth - 34.20 pg.). McRoberts is also tied for 23rd in the league in scoring  at 12.8 points per game. Over the last four games, the 6-10, 240-pound forward is averaging 15.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.3 blocks per game. McRoberts also has three double-doubles in the last four games for the Blue Devils.
  • DeMarcus Nelson registered his third 20+ point game of the season in the loss to Virginia Tech. He netted a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point distance. Nelson has led the Blue Devils in scoring six times this season and is 16th in the ACC in scoring at 15.0 ppg. He is also tied for eighth in the league in field goal percentage (.517).
  • The Blue Devils have held 10 of 15 opponents below 25.0 percent shooting from three-point distance this season. In turn, Duke has shot better than 37.5 percent on treys in 11 of 15 games. Duke ranks first in the ACC in three-point defense at 24.8 percent (53-of-214) and three-point percentage (40.6 pct. - 86-of-212).
  • Duke has outrebounded the opposition in 13 of its 15 games this season. The Blue Devils are fifth in the ACC in rebound margin at +7.0 rpg. Over the last four games, Duke has averaged 42.2 rebounds with a +8.2 rebound margin. Indiana and George Mason are the only two teams to outrebound the Blue Devils this season.
  • The Blue Devils have had at least three players reach double-figures in scoring in 11 of 15 games (73.3 pct.) this season. DeMarcus Nelson has a team-high 13 double-figure scoring games, while Josh McRoberts is second with 10.
    Sophomore Greg Paulus is averaging 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game over the last four contests. He is also shooting 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field and 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from three-point distance over that span.
  • Wednesday’s game marks Duke’s first true road game of the season. The Blue Devils are 20-5 under Coach K in road openers, including an active streak of 10 straight wins. Duke is 2-1 in neutral site contests this season.
