DURHAM, N.C. - Duke (13-3, 0-2), 11th in both the AP poll and ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, faces unranked Miami (9-8, 2-1) on Sunday at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. Tip-off is set for 5:38 p.m. with FSN televising the contest.
Duke is coming off a 74-63 road loss to Georgia Tech on Wednesday, while Miami posted a 63-58 road win over Maryland in its last outing.
Freshman Jon Scheyer paced Duke in the loss with 16 points and four assists. He knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 10-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead with 14:01 remaining in the half.
Georgia Tech extended its lead to 54-43 with 9:31 remaining in the game. Duke countered with a 10-1 run that included another Scheyer three-pointer. His third trey of the game ended a string of 13 straight missed three-pointers by the Blue Devils.
With the score at 55-53, Duke got four straight stops but could not convert on the offensive end to tie the contest. Georgia Tech outscored Duke 19-10 over the final 3:31 to secure the victory.
The Blue Devils, who entered the game first in the ACC in three-point percentage, finished 4-of-20 (20.0 pct.) from the three-point arc. Tech knocked down 7-of-12 (58.3 pct.) treys.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts finished with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals, while junior DeMarcus Nelson added 12 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals in the loss.
Storylines
- Duke is 156-37 under Mike Krzyzewski following a loss. The Blue Devils, losers of two straight, have not had a three-game losing streak since the 1995-96 season. Including its current streak, Duke has lost back-to-back games just six times in the last 10 years.
- Duke has opened ACC play with back-to-back losses for the first time since the 1995-96 season. Duke dropped its first four ACC games that season and finished the year 8-8 in conference play.
- The Blue Devils are 4-0 against Miami since the Hurricanes joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (2004-05). Duke has won eight straight overall against the Hurricanes, including an 80-76 win in the ACC Tournament last season.
- The Duke-Miami series has produced some memorable Blue Devil moments. On Dec. 10, 1988, Danny Ferry scored a Duke single-game record 58 points in a 117-102 victory. On Feb. 19, 2006, J.J. Redick scored 30 points to pass Johnny Dawkins as Duke’s all-time leading scorer in a 92-71 win over the Hurricanes.
- Coach K owns a 264-117 record in conference regular season play, including a 115-75 mark in road games. His 264 career ACC wins is the second most in league history.
- Duke is 159-37 (.811) outside of Cameron Indoor Stadium since the 1997-98 season, including a 78-20 (796) mark in ACC play. The Blue Devils have won 55 of its last 73 ACC road contests.
- The Blue Devils have had at least three players reach double-figures in scoring in 12 of 16 games (75.0 pct.) this season. DeMarcus Nelson has a team-high 14 double-figure scoring games, while Josh McRoberts is second with 11.
- Sophomore Josh McRoberts is the only player in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in rebounds (third - 7.9 rpg.), blocks (third - 2.56 bpg.), assists (10th - 4.06 apg.), assist-to-turnover ratio (ninth - 1.76:1) and minutes played (sixth - 34.38 pg.). McRoberts is also 24th in the league in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Over the last four games, the 6-10, 240-pound forward is averaging 16.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.8 blocks per game.
- DeMarcus Nelson has led the Blue Devils in scoring six times this season and is 17th in the ACC in scoring at 14.8 ppg. He is also ninth in the league in field goal percentage (.506 - 83-of-164).
- Duke announced on Thursday, Jan. 11, that Shelden Williams and J.J. Redick will have their respective jersey numbers retired at separate ceremonies this season. Williams’ number 23 will be retired on January 28 and Redick’s number 4 will be retired on February 4 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The two former Blue Devil stars will be the 12th and 13th players to be honored at “Retirement Day” at Duke, joining Dick Groat (10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11), Grant Hill (33), Shane Battier (31) and Jason Williams (22).
- Duke forced a season-high 28 turnovers in the loss to Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils are causing 15.4 topg., but have been plagued by their own miscues. Duke has 259 turnovers compared to 220 assists. Duke has finished a season with more turnovers than assists six times (1980-81, 1981-82, 1982-83, 1986-87, 2002-03, 2004-05) under Coach K.
