DURHAM, N.C. - Duke (14-3, 1-2), 14th in the AP poll and 17th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, faces unranked Wake Forest (9-7, 1-3) on Thursday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tip-off is set for 7:02 p.m. with espn2 televising the contest.
Duke snapped a two-game losing streak with an 85-63 win over Miami on Sunday, Jan. 14. The Blue Devils shot a season-high 68.3 percent (28-of-41), including a school record 81.0 percent (17-of-21) in the first half, from the field in the contest.
Freshman Jon Scheyer led four Blue Devil double-figure scorers with a career-high 25 points. The Northbrook, Ill., native was 5-of-8 from the fi eld (4-of-6 on treys) and 11-of-11 from the foul line in the win. He also added three assists, two rebounds and a steal in 39 minutes of play.
Greg Paulus scored 15 points, including 11 in the fi rst half for the Blue Devils. He knocked down 3-of-4 three-point attempts in the opening half and fi nished the game 4-of-8 from the fi eld overall. Junior DeMarcus Nelson went 7-of-8 from the fl oor en route to a 14-point effort, while Josh McRoberts added 11 points. McRoberts also added fi ve rebounds, fi ve assists and one blocked shot.
The Blue Devils also outrebounded Miami 32-16, marking the second time this season Duke has held an oppoenent to fewer than 20 rebounds in a game. The 16 rebounds is also the lowest total by a conference opponent during Mike Krzyzewski’s tenure at Duke. Sophomore David McClure controlled the glass with 11 boards, his second double-figure rebounding game of the year.
Storylines
- Duke leads the all-time series with Wake Forest 154-75, including a 35-21 mark under Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils are 52-16 overall at Cameron Indoor Stadium with an 17-8 mark at home under Krzyzewski.
- The Blue Devils have won nine straight games versus Wake Forest at Cameron Indoor Stadium. During that stretch, Duke has averaged 90.8 ppg. and held the Demon Deacons to 69.7 ppg. for a 21.1 average margin of victory. All nine wins have been by double digit and seven of the nine have been by 18 or more points.
- Mike Krzyzewski owns a 265-117 record in conference regular season play, including a 150-42 mark in road games. His 265 career ACC wins is the second most in league history.
- Duke is coming off one of its best offensive games of the year. The Blue Devils scored 85 points, including a season-high 49 in the fi rst half, in Sunday’s win over Miami. Duke posted the eighth best fi eld goal percentage in school history, finishing the game 28-of-41 (68.3 pct.) from the fi eld. In the opening half, the Blue Devils set a school record for first half field goal percentage by going 17-of-21 (81.0 pct.) from the floor.
- Freshman Jon Scheyer had a season-high 25 points in the win over Miami. His 25 points was the most by a freshman since Luol Deng scored 25 against North Carolina on March 6, 2004. Scheyer knocked down four treys and was 11-of-11 from the free throw line, becoming the fi rst player to hit all his free throws while attempting at least 10 since J.J. Redick was 10-of-10 on Jan. 18, 2006, vs. N.C. State. In three league games, Scheyer is averaging 17.7 points per game (eighth in the ACC). He also ranks fourth in free throw pct. (.895 - 17-of-19), tied for second in three-point field goals (2.67 pg.) and second in minutes played (39.0 pg.) in conference-only statistics.
- Sophomore Josh McRoberts is the only player in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in rebounds (t-fi fth - 7.7 rpg.), blocks (fourth - 2.47 bpg.), assists (ninth - 4.12 apg.), assist-to-turnover ratio (ninth - 1.71:1) and minutes played (sixth - 34.24 pg.). McRoberts is also 24th in the league in scoring at 12.6 points per game. Over the last four games, the 6-10, 240-pound forward is averaging 15.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 blocks per game.
- DeMarcus Nelson has led the Blue Devils in scoring six times this season and is 17th in the ACC in scoring at 14.8 ppg. He is also eighth in the league in fi eld goal percentage (.523 - 90-of-172).
- Duke announced on Thursday, Jan. 11, that Shelden Williams and J.J. Redick will have their respective jersey numbers retired at separate ceremonies this season. Williams’ number 23 will be retired on January 28 and Redick’s number 4 will be retired on February 4 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The two former Blue Devil stars will be the 12th and 13th players to be honored at “Retirement Day” at Duke, joining Dick Groat (10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11), Grant Hill (33), Shane Battier (31) and Jason Williams (22).
