DURHAM, N.C. - Duke (18-4, 5-3), eighth in the AP poll and 10th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, faces unranked Florida State (16-6, 4-4) on Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tip-off is set for 2:08 p.m. with FSN televising the contest.
The Blue Devils fell to Virginia, 68-66 in overtime, on Thursday in their last outing. The loss snapped Duke’s five-game win streak. Two of the team’s four losses this season have come in overtime.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts led Duke with 19 points and three blocks. McRoberts has now reached double-figures in scoring in 12 straight contests and in 15 of the last 17 games.
DeMarcus Nelson added 12 points, four rebounds and two assists in the loss, while Greg Paulus had 10 points and a game-high five assists.
Duke also received strong play from the power forward position. Lance Thomas and David McClure combined for 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks from the four spot. Thomas was 4-of-4 from the field for nine points, while McClure recorded a team-high seven rebounds.
The Blue Devils outrebounded Virginia, 34-33, and held a 36-24 edge on points in the paint but could not overcome a sizeable free throw discrepancy. Duke was 9-of-11 from the foul line, while Virginia was 16-of-19, including 10-of-11 by Cavalier guard J.R. Reynolds.
Duke shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field in the opening half and 44.1 percent (26-of-59) for the game. The Blue Devils missed their final eight shots of the game, including all five shot attempts in overtime.
Storylines
Duke leads the all-time series with Florida State 25-5, including a 15-0 mark at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils have won five of the last six meetings against the Seminoles.
The Blue Devils have been ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll for eight weeks this season. Duke is 742-168 (.815) all-time when ranked in the top 10, including a 10-3 mark in 2006-07. Krzyzewski-led Duke teams have been ranked in the top 10 a total of 331 weeks.
Duke posted a 36-24 advantage on points in the paint in Thursday’s loss at Virginia. In the last five games, the Blue Devils are averaging 36.7 points in the paint per game. Duke has a +11.3 edge on points in the paint in the last five games.
The Blue Devils have outrebounded the opposition 19 times this season. Duke, 16-3 when outrebounding its opponent, is ranked 15th in the NCAA with a +6.8 rebound margin. Josh McRoberts has led the Blue Devils in rebounds 16 times this season, including five double-figure rebounding efforts.
Freshman Lance Thomas is averaging 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over the last two games. The Scotch Plains, N.J., native is 7-of-9 (77.8 pct.) from the field during that stretch.
Junior DeMarcus Nelson has reached double-figures in scoring a team-high 19 times this season and is tied for 16th in the ACC in scoring at 14.4 ppg. He is also eighth in the league in field goal percentage (.509 - 119-of-234). Nelson leads the team in steals with 33 and is second in rebounding at 5.5 rpg. He is one of just three guards (joining N.C. State’s Gavin Grant and Boston College’s Sean Marshall) in the ACC averaging more than five rebounds per game. Nelson has grabbed eight rebounds in two of the last three games and has five or more rebounds in 14 games this season.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts, a Midseason Top 30 candidate for the Wooden Award, ranks 21st in the ACC in scoring (13.2 ppg.), tied for fourth in rebounding (7.9 rpg.), second in blocks (2.50 bpg.), 10th in assists (3.86 apg.) and ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.63:1). McRoberts has scored in double-figures in 12 straight games and in 15 of the last 17 contests.
David McClure is averaging 7.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals over the last six games. He has also made 17-of-26 (65.4 pct.) shots from the field and 11-of-14 (78.6 pct.) free throws during that span.
Freshman Jon Scheyer has made 29 straight free throws (tied with Trajan Langdon for fourth-most in Duke history). On the year, Scheyer is shooting 87.1 percent (74-of-85) from the free throw line, third-best in the ACC. Scheyer is also ninth in the ACC in three-point field goals (1.82 pg.) and eighth in minutes played (33.73 pg.).
Duke will retire J.J. Redick’s number 4 jersey at halftime of Sunday’s game. Redick joins Dick Groat (10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11), Grant Hill (33), Shane Battier (31), Jason Williams (22) and Shelden Williams (23) as the 13th player to be honored at “Retirement Day” at Duke. Redick closed his career as the leading scorer in ACC history with 2,769 career points (16th in NCAA history). He also holds the NCAA record with 457 three-point field goals made and is second among the NCAA’s all-time leaders in free throw percentage (.912). Redick, a two-time National and ACC Player of the Year, reached double digits in scoring 122 times.
