DURHAM, N.C. - Duke (18-6, 5-5), ranked 16th in both the AP poll and ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, faces unranked Maryland (17-7, 3-6) on Sunday at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md. Tip-off is set for 5:08 p.m. with FSN televising the contest.
Duke dropped its third straight game in its last outing, falling to No. 5 North Carolina, 79-73, on Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The three-game skid is Duke’s longest losing streak since dropping the final three games of the 1995-96 season.
Freshman Jon Scheyer led four Blue Devils in double-figures with a career-high 26 points against North Carolina. The Northbrook, Ill., native went 8-of-18 from the floor, including 4-of-10 from three-point distance, and 6-of-8 from the foul line in the loss.
Greg Paulus added 15 points, three rebounds and four assists (with zero turnovers), while freshman Gerald Henderson netted a career-best 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Henderson also had four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal versus the Tar Heels. Junior DeMarcus Nelson came off the bench to score 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Josh McRoberts recorded six points, 11 rebounds, three assists and one block in a reserve role.
Duke jumped out to a five-point halftime lead (39-34), but North Carolina shot a blistering 59.4 percent (16-of-27) in the second half to overcome the deficit. The Tar Heels also outrebounded 22-14 over the final 20 minutes of action.
Storylines
- Duke leads the all-time series with Maryland, 101-58, including a 42-18 mark under Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils are 2-2 all-time at the Comcast Center, including a 96-88 win there last season.
- The Blue Devils have dropped three straight games by a combined total of nine points. The average margin of defeat in Duke’s six losses this season is 5.5 points per game. The Blue Devils are 5-4 on the year in games decided by 10 points or less.
- Duke’s current losing streak of three games marks just the 15th time a Coach K-led team has lost more than two in a row in 27 years at Duke In the past seven years, the Blue Devils have lost 37 games with the opponents’ average margin of victory in those contests just 5.89 points per game.
- The Blue Devils have been ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams in 200 consecutive AP polls, the longest current streak in the nation (second all-time). Sunday’s game with Maryland marks the 380th consecutive game (dating back to the close of the 1995-96 season) for Duke as a ranked team.
- Duke has a 159-38 record (.807) outside of Cameron Indoor Stadium since the 1997-98 season. The Blue Devils are 88-16 in neutral settings and 71-22 in true road games during that period. Since 1998, Maryland (.865, 134-21) is the only ACC school that has a higher HOME winning percentage than Duke’s .807 away winning percentage.
- Sunday's game features the top two field goal percentage defenses in the ACC. Maryland leads the conference in the category at 38.3 percent, while Duke is second with opponents shooting 39.9 percent from the field. The Blue Devils have the top scoring defense in the league at 58.0 ppg., while Maryland is fifth at 67.6 ppg.
- Freshman Jon Scheyer scored a career-high 26 points on Wednesday against North Carolina. He went 8-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-10 from three-point distance, and 6-of-8 from the foul line in the loss. In league action, Scheyer ranks 14th in scoring (14.7 ppg.), second in free throw percentage (.922), fifth in three-point field goals (2.00 pg.) and ninth in minutes played (34.70 mpg.).
- Greg Paulus had 15 points, three rebounds, four assists and zero turnovers in the loss to North Carolina. He has now reached double-digits in scoring in seven of the last eight contests. In conference play, Paulus is averaging 11.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Paulus has a 1.65:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in league action and has scored in double-figures in seven of 10 league games.
- Freshman Gerald Henderson posted a career-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting against North Carolina on Wednesday. In 10 conference games, Henderson is averaging 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game, while shooting 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the floor.
- Sophomore Josh McRoberts ranks second in the ACC (tied for 21st in the NCAA) in blocked shots (2.50 bpg.). The Carmel, Ind., native has 60 blocks this season (14th-most in Duke history) and 106 blocks in 60 career games. McRoberts, a Midseason Top 30 candidate for the Wooden Award, also ranks 22nd in the ACC in scoring (12.9 ppg.), fourth in rebounding (7.9 rpg.) and seventh in minutes played (34.71).
- Junior DeMarcus Nelson has reached double-figures in scoring a team-high 21 times and is 17th in the ACC in scoring at 14.3 ppg. Nelson has scored in double-figures in 11 of the last 12 contests.
