Rowbury Records Fastest Mile In NCAA This Season

Senior Shannon Rowbury ran the NCAA's fastest women's indoor mile this season on Friday afternoon at the Tyson Invitational.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. and CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Senior Shannon Rowbury ran a school record mile of 4:34.94 on Friday at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The meet was one of two the Blue Devils were competing in on the day, as other members of the team were in Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Carolina Classic. Rowbury’s time was the fastest mile in NCAA indoor track this year and an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, making her the first Duke competitor to reach an NCAA automatic bid this season.
 
Women’s: Senior Elizabeth Wort and sophomore Maddie McKeever also had strong showings in the mile at the Tyson Invitational. Wort ran a 4:44.64, which is good for an NCAA provisional mark and the third best mile in Duke history. McKeever’s 4:51.62 mile qualified her for the ECAC championships and a third place finish in the college division of the meet.

Junior Lara Jones recorded her fifth ECAC-qualifying pole vault of the season in Fayetteville. Jones cleared 12’-6.75” and finished 13th at the meet.

Men’s: Senior Daniel King ran the 400 meters in 48.11 at the Tyson Invitational, qualifying him for the second time this season for the IC4A championships in the event.

In the 3000 meters, junior Chris Spooner registered an IC4A qualifying time of 8:22.66. Spooner’s run was the second fastest mile in Duke history, and he finished eighth at the meet.

In action at the Carolina Classic, senior Jonathan Fay qualified for the IC4A’s for the third time this season with a pole vault of 16’-0.75.” That mark was also good for first place at the meet. 

Day Two: Competition will resume Saturday morning in Fayetteville and continue throughout the day. Duke’s team still has five more events--- two for the men and three for the women--- to compete in. The Carolina Classic was a one day event.
