DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore guard Greg Paulus underwent successful surgery on his left foot on Tuesday at the Duke University Medical Center. Paulus reaggravated a previous injury in the left foot on Saturday, Oct. 14 on the first day of practice for the Blue Devils. He missed the entire preseason while undergoing a treatment plan that did not include surgery before returning to the court for the season opener on Nov. 12.
Paulus averaged 11.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in 33 contests (29 starts) last season. He shot 45.6 percent (130-of-285) from the field, including a team-high 45.0 percent (68-of-151) from three-point distance. He closed his sophomore campaign ranked tied for fifth in the ACC in three-point field goals at 2.06 treys per game.
Sophomore Martynas Pocius also underwent successful surgery on his right ankle late last week. Pocius played in 27 contests last year, shooting 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the field and averaging 1.9 points and 0.6 rebounds per game.
“Both Greg and Martynas played with these injuries the entire 2006-07 season,” said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “I am very proud of the toughness they showed in playing through their respective injuries and being important contributors to our team. Now, they both begin a long healing process. We expect a full recovery for both of them and look forward to the two of them returning at full strength for next season.”
Both surgeries were performed by the Duke Sports Medicine Department, utilizing their own foot and ankle specialists.
