DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno and the Duke rowing program are excited to announce the signing of Melanie Holmes to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Blue Devils in the 2018-19 campaign.

Holmes comes to Durham from Scarsdale, N.Y., and is currently a senior at Scarsdale High School. Holmes is a member of the Row America Rye under the direction of Marko Serafimovski.

Holmes was a member of the V4+ squad that placed second at the 2017 Northeast Regionals and third at the US Rowing Youth National Championships in the same boat. Holmes was named to the US Rowing Junior National High Performance Team in 2017 and was a semi-finalist in the women’s 2x at the US Rowing Club National Championships. Additionally, the Scarsdale, N.Y., native competed at the 2017 US Rowing Club National Championships in the intermediate 8+ and in the youth 4+.

In addition to rowing, Holmes was a member of her high school cross country and swimming teams.

Outside of athletics, Holmes was a National Merit Commendation recipient, was inducted into Signifier (a school honor society), is a member of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society where she received Area-All State recognition and was a head prose editor and writer for the school newspaper.

What has been your favorite rowing memory?
MH:
“My favorite rowing memory is the semifinal of nationals. We spent most of the race sitting in third or fourth place with top-three in the A final, but we somehow managed to win and move on to the final.”

How did you get started in rowing?
MH:
“I participated in a week-long camp one summer to try it out and I really liked it so I decided to join the team that fall.”

Why did you choose Duke?
MH:
“I chose Duke because it has stellar academics and a great rowing team.”
