Duke Cheerleading

Salutation
Welcome to Duke University Cheerleading. We are dedicated to providing unwavering spirit, energy, tradition, and excellence to Duke Athletics, the student body, and to those whom we reach outside of and within the Duke community. We are the proud faces of Duke University Athletics and we carry this pride year-round wherever we go as representatives and ambassadors of this highly regarded program.

We, as a team, are devoted to creating and upholding a strong support system amongst ourselves that is bound by trust and understanding. We are excitement. We are talent. We are dedication. We are heart. We are Duke Cheerleading.

Our Program
The Duke University Cheerleading Program is an extraordinarily visible and active group on campus and within the surrounding community. Along with the primary purpose of cheering for Duke Athletics, the cheerleaders host cheer day, instruct clinics throughout the year, and make appearances at charity events and public and private functions.

Our program is composed of two teams, the Blue Squad and the White Squad, having 12 to 13 members each. The Blue Squad is responsible for performing for home and away football games as well as home and neutral site men’s basketball games, while the White Squad performs for home football games and home and neutral site women’s basketball games.

Duke Cheerleading is a grounded program which does not stunt, hence we do not partake in competitions nor are there opportunities for scholarships. We are, however, a program that takes tremendous pride in our extensive tumbling skills and performance routines. When a student-athlete makes the Duke Cheerleading team, a yearlong commitment, in turn, is also made. The season begins mid-August with preseason camp and ends in April with the conclusion of the NCAA basketball tournaments. In addition to athletic events and game day responsibilities, time is dedicated throughout each week at practices, strength & conditioning sessions, tumbling workouts, and campus and community events. Since our team is comprised of student-athletes from across the nation and due to the high caliber nature of Duke Academics and summer work-study opportunities, the Duke Cheerleading program does not offer summer cheerleading camps.

Making the Team
Tryouts for the Blue Squad are held mid to late April for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors. Incoming freshmen will try out for the White Squad only. Tryouts for the White Squad are held at the commencement of the school year, generally the first or second weekend of September. Our tryout format may vary slightly from year to year, but will include the following components: learn and perform a pom/dance routine, learn and perform a sideline chant, showcase jumps and tumbling skills. A minimum of a standing handspring is preferred as well as a handspring pass. Duke Cheerleading strictly adheres to all tumbling rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA and AACCA.
