Mike Sobb has spent nearly 30 years at Duke, currently serving as Associate Athletic Director for Resource Acquisition. His role includes driving revenue, budget relief for the entire department of athletics, looking for new sources of revenue for Duke Athletics, and serving as the department contact with various corporate entities and community groups in the area.
After selling corporate sponsorships for over 20 years for Duke Athletics, Sobb serves as the department liaison with IMG College, Duke’s multi-media rights holder. He negotiated the first corporate naming rights agreement at Duke Athletics, with the Delta Air Lines Suite Level of Blue Devil Tower. He heads sales for suites, table top and club seats in Blue Devil Tower in Wallace Wade Stadium, memberships to the Champions Club in Cameron Indoor Stadium and other venues within the expanding athletics complex. His resource acquisition team also sells and implements all game day hospitality for football and various other sports, as well as Club Blue Devil in football and basketball on game day. He works with Duke Stores related to licensing and food and merchandise concessions agreements and implementation.
With direct oversight of the men’s golf program, Sobb’s role as sport supervisor includes day-to-day interaction with the coaches, current and former student-athletes and other support staff, oversight of the team’s budget and coordination of efforts to continually enhance the program.
Sobb’s passion for golf makes him a natural fit to work with the men’s team. He has coordinated and overseen Duke’s annual tournament, the Rod Myers Invitational, for over 20 years and worked with the golf staff on the rededication of the Duke University Golf Club in spring 1994. Sobb served as marketing chair for the 2001 Division I NCAA Men’s Golf Championships at Duke and as chairman of the ACC Men’s Golf Tournament Committee from 2011-2016. He is an active member of the North Carolina Golf Panel and maintains the displays and historical murals in the Karcher-Ingram building, as well.
Sobb started at Duke in 1988 as an Assistant Sports Information Director before being named Promotions Director in 1990. He was named Director of Marketing in January 2001 and promoted to Assistant AD for Marketing three years later, with Corporate Relations added to the title in 2008. Sobb was also responsible for Duke Athletics’ corporate partners program for nearly 20 years until IMG College assumed the rights in July 2009. After serving as Associate AD, External Affairs from 2009 through July 2013, Sobb moved into his current role.
Sobb is the athletics representative on the Corporate Relations and Calendar Committees for Duke University, and is a founding member of the South Durham Baseball Foundation. He has also served as past chairman of the ACC Marketing Director’s Committee, was a founding board member of the Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center, and on the Durham Chamber of Commerce’s Bull City Crowd Pleasers committee.
He coordinated the purchase, installation and implementation of the video board in Wallace Wade Stadium as well as new scoreboards and/or signage in Cameron Indoor, Koskinen and Ambler Stadiums and at Williams Field. He set up and negotiated Duke Athletics’ outbound ticket sales agreement with IMG-Learfield Ticket Solutions. Sobb also founded Duke’s Read with the Blue Devils program in spring 1991 and oversees the department’s dealer car program.
A 1987 graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the Kelley School of Business, Sobb worked for three years in sports information at his alma mater as a student assistant before serving an internship at the University of North Carolina.
Sobb resides in Durham and has three children; Keith, Molly and Ben.
