Mike Krzyzewski Honored At Halftime
Duke men's basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski was inducted into the Army Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2009 on Friday and was honored at halftime of the Duke-Army football game.
Glover and Snyderwine Start For First Time
True freshman Tyree Glover earned his first collegiate start on Saturday at Army. The last true freshman to start at linebacker for Duke was Adam Banks, who started against Navy and Clemson in 2007. Walk-on junior Will Snyderwine also drew his first career start as the team's kickoff specialist and placekicker.
Lewis Throws 50th Career Touchdown Pass
Senior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis became the second player in Duke history and 14th player in ACC history with 50 career touchdown passes. Lewis connected with Conner Vernon for a 14-yard score in the second quarter for his 50th TD toss.
Renfree Leads Touchdown Drives On First Two Series
Redshirt freshman Sean Renfree led touchdown drives on his first two collegiate series. Renfree threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brett Huffman on the second play of his first career drive. Following an Army field goal, Renfree led a nine-play 78-yard drive capped off by a 31-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Varner. Renfree finished the game completing 7-of-8 pass attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
First Pass Attempt For Renfree Results In Touchdown
Redshirt freshman Sean Renfree completed a 17-yard pass to redshirt junior Brett Huffman for a touchdown on his first career pass attempt. It was the second play of the series for Renfree in his collegiate debut.
Vernon Scores First Career Touchdown
True freshman Conner Vernon caught a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for his first career score. The last true freshman to score in a game for Duke was Nov. 8, 2008, when Jay Hollingsworth scored a TD against N.C. State.
Huffman Gives Duke Lead
Huffman caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give Duke a 14-10 lead, the first lead of the game for the Blue Devils. It was the second career touchdown for Huffman. His first career touchdown came last season against N.C. State.
Varner Catches Long TD Pass
Sophomore Donovan Varner hauled in a 31-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter to give Duke a 21-13 lead. The touchdown was the second of Varner's career. He caught one touchdown pass against Wake Forest last season.
The Duke defense forced four turnovers with two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. The Blue Devils scored 12 points on two interception returns for touchdowns. The four turnovers were the most since Duke forced five turnovers at Virginia Tech last season.
Wright Returns Two Interceptions For Touchdowns
Senior cornerback Leon Wright returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter becoming the first player in school history to accomplish the feat. He returned one 51 yards for a touchdown and the second 33 yards for a score. The two interceptions give him seven for his career. The most he has had in a single season is three in 2007, which included a two-interception performance at Miami. The last Duke player with two interceptions in a single game was Adrian Aye-Darko against Miami last season. The last player to return an interception for a touchdown was Jabari Marshall against Virginia in 2008.
Defense Forces Fumbles
The Duke defense forced three fumbles in the game, recovering two of them. The two caused turnovers are the first two of the season for the Blue Devils. Last year Duke forced two or more turnovers in six of the 12 games. Ayanga Okpokowuruk and Matt Daniels each caused fumbles against Army while Leon Wright and John Drew posted fumble recoveries.
Double Digit Tackles
Senior linebacker Vincent Rey and senior defensive end Ayanga Okpokowuruk each tallied 10 tackles to lead Duke against Army. The 10 tackles were a career high for Okpokowuruk, whose previous career high was seven at Vanderbilt a year ago. Rey now has double digit tackles in both games this season and in 14 career games.
Oghobaase Climbs TFL List
Senior Vince Oghobaase moved up two spots into eighth all-time at Duke with 31.5 career tackles for loss. He had 1.5 tackles for loss at Army to move past Kevin Lewis and David Wafle.
Vernon On Kickoff Return
Vernon returned kickoffs for the first time at Duke and tallied two returns for 76 yards. Vernon had a 55-yard return in the second quarter.
