HONOLULU - The No. 14 Duke men's tennis team claimed a 7-0 sweep over No. 37 Hawai'i in their season opener on Saturday in Honolulu.

"This was the perfect way to start the season," said head coach Ramsey Smith. "We have been practicing hard all week, and played well today. The freshmen were particularly impressive in their dual match debut. Jonathan (Stokke) and I are very excited about this spring season."

The Blue Devils won all three doubles matches and all three singles contests for the 7-0 victory.

In doubles No. 12 Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha picked up an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 and 3 squads each won 8-4. Jared Pinsky and Fred Saba defeated Jeremy Tweedt and Daniel Llarenas in the second position and Chris Mengel and David Holland downed Jonathan Brooklyn and David Schuster at No. 3.

Duke's three ranked singles players all won on Saturday. Cunha, the No. 9 player in the nation, competed in the top spot and won in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 over Dennis Lajola. No. 5 Carleton cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Leo Rosenberg in the second slot. No. 118 Mengel also won 6-3, 6-2 over Tweedt.

The bottom half of the lineup also came through from the Blue Devils. Saba rolled over Brooklyn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Pinsky came back for a three-set win over Jared Spiker 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 slot. Holland won 6-3, 6-2 in the final position in the lineup over Jared Spiker.

Duke will play its first home match on Jan. 23 against Elon at 12 noon.
