Sophomore right-hander Chase Bebout earned his first win of the year...
DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Chase Bebout  carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and freshman Chris Marconcini hit a two-out, three-run triple to give Duke a 6-1 win over Villanova in game one on Friday at Jack Coombs Field.

Bebout (1-0), a 6-6 right-hander, scattered two hits, two walks and one earned run over seven complete innings to earn his first win of the season on his second Friday start. Bebout retired 10 consecutive batters from the second through the end of the fifth before Villanova shortstop Mike Calbi broke up the no-hit bid with a grounder up the middle to lead off the sixth inning.

Marconcini broke the game open for Duke (5-1) with a two-out, bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the second inning for his second three-base knock in the last two games. The 6-5 freshman first baseman finished the day 1-for-3 with the three RBI and a run. Marconcini pushed his RBI total to a team-high 10 for the season, eight of which have come with two outs on the board.

Marconcini was one of several Duke freshmen to contribute in the win as third baseman Jordan Betts was 3-for-4 with a run for his second career three-hit game. Freshman right-hander Mark Lumpa, meanwhile, took over for Bebout in the eighth inning and shut out the Wildcats (2-2) over the final two innings.

Duke scored its six runs on seven hits and six walks. Will Piwnica-Worms, Dennis O’Grady and Angelo LaBruna also had RBI while Piwnica-Worms swiped his team-leading fifth base of the season.

The Blue Devils once again jumped out to an early lead with a big inning, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Jeff Kremer reached first on a walk to start the inning, and Betts would double in the next at bat to put two runners in scoring position. O’Grady picked up the first RBI of the inning with a groundout to the right side, and Duke followed by loading the bases on a walk to Anthony D’Alessandro and hit batsman. Pedevillano, who was hit by the pitch that loaded the bases, then beat the throw to second base on an RBI fielder’s choice ground ball from LaBruna to keep the bases loaded. Marconcini then cleared the bases with his triple to the right field gap, and Piwnica-Worms sent him in with another base hit down the right field.

Villanova starter Kevin McMyne (1-1) then bounced back to shut down the Blue Devils for the rest of his six-inning start. The damage had already been done, however, as Bebout and Lumpa combined to do the same to a Wildcat lineup that entered the game .377.

Duke and Villanova will square off in game two of the three game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field, and game three will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Duke will use left-hander Eric Pfisterer (0-0) on the mound in game two opposite Villanova southpaw Kyle Helisek.
