DURHAM, N.C. – A celebration of veteran sportswriter and Duke Athletics Hall of Fame member Bill Brill’s life will be held on Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 PM in Scharf Hall, which is on the north end of the Michael W. Krzyzewski Center and adjacent to Cameron Indoor Stadium. Brill passed away on April 10 after a battle with esophageal and liver cancer. He was 79.

The 1952 Duke graduate is a former student assistant in the sports information office and a Duke basketball and baseball statistician. He spent 35 years as a columnist and sports editor of the Roanoke Times & World-News and served as the President of the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Association from 1982-83.

He has authored three books on Duke basketball - A Season is a Lifetime, Duke Basketball – An Illustrated History and Duke Basketball – A Legacy of Achievement. He also earned the College Sports Information Directors of America's (CoSIDA) Jake Wade Award in 1995 given for lifetime contribution to collegiate sports.

Brill, for whom the Media Room in Cameron Indoor Stadium is named, was a member of Duke University’s Heritage Society for his support of Duke basketball, and the James B. Duke Society for philanthropy to the university.

Per Brill’s request, memorial gifts may be made to the Duke University Iron Dukes Office, Box 90542, Durham, NC  27708, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Those wishing to attend Sunday’s event should park in the Whitford Drive Lot located between Koskinen Stadium and Jack Coombs Field. It is recommended to come early as a large turnout is expected.
