CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia starter Danny Hultzen scattered four hits over seven shutout innings to lead the top-ranked Cavaliers to a 10-0 win over Duke on Friday night at Davenport Field. The junior southpaw registered nine strikeouts in the win without issuing a walk.

Hultzen improved to 8-0 on the season for Virginia (34-3, 14-2 ACC), lowering his ERA to 1.17. He retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced, including 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh.

Duke (20-17, 4-12 ACC) threatened to score in the opening frame. Designated hitter Jeff Kremer worked the count to 3-2 and lined a single through the left side on the ninth pitch of the game’s opening at-bat. After right fielder Chris Marconcini reached on an error by third baseman Steven Proscia, left fielder Anthony D’Alessandro moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. With Blue Devil runners on second and third and only one out, Hultzen settled in, striking out third baseman Jordan Betts and getting center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms to fly out to center to end the inning.

Blue Devil starter Dillon Haviland needed only 20 pitches to retire the first seven batters he faced.

Virginia left fielder John Barr had an RBI-single and catcher John Hicks added a two-run double in the bottom of the third to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. All three Virginia runs came with two outs in the inning.

The Cavaliers added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Right fielder Colin Harrington had an RBI-single and second baseman Keith Werman plated a run with a sacrifice bunt.

In the bottom of the fifth, first baseman Jared King dropped a two-run double just inside the left field line, pushing the UVa lead to 7-0, and chasing Haviland from the game. Two batters later, pinch hitter David Coleman lined an RBI-single to left to give the Cavaliers an 8-0 advantage.

Shortstop Chris Taylor knocked a two-run single through the left side in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final 10-0 margin.

Harrington finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Cavalier offense. Hicks went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored and King was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor added two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Barr, Coleman and Werman all drove in a run.

Aaron Stull and Artie Lewicki both pitched one scoreless inning each, allowing no hits and striking out one batter apiece.

Haviland (2-3) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs on nine hits in four and a third innings of work. Drew Van Orden struck out two batters while limiting Virginia to one run on two hits in two and a third innings of relief. Tito Nava worked a perfect eighth inning for the Blue Devils with one strikeout.

Kremer paced the Duke offense, finishing 2-for-4 on the night. Marconcini and catcher Michael Rosenfeld both added a hit for the Blue Devils.

Duke and Virginia will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. to wrap up the series. Duke’s Dennis O'Grady (4-2, 4.70 ERA) is slated to face Tyler Wilson (4-0, 2.68 ERA) in game one. Marcus Stroman (1-1, 2.55 ERA) will then pitch opposite Will Roberts (7-0, 0.87 ERA) in the series finale.
