DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Angelo LaBruna, who started all 56 games at shortstop for Duke as a freshman, had his best stretch of the summer last week when he hit .450 over five games with the Wilson Tobs in the Coastal Plain League.
LaBruna, who is the only player on the Tobs roster to appear in all 47 games, raised his batting average over 30 points with his recent tear.
Freshman All-America Chris Marconcini (Valley League) and his classmate Aaron Cohn (Atlantic Collegiate League) have also enjoyed hot streaks in their respective leagues, while fellow sophomore Matt Berezo kept up his pace as one of the top leadoff hitters in the Prospect League.
With some summer leagues winding down, and others already wrapped up, several Blue Devils are already on campus taking summer courses and training for the 2012 season. Read on for updates on those who are still playing.
Chase Bebout
Junior – RHP
Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plain League)
Pitching Stats: 9 starts, 2-6, 4.44 ERA, 52.2 IP, 41 K, 21 BB, .274 B/Avg.
Bebout leads the Tobs in innings pitched and won his last start with seven innings of three-run ball against Outer Banks. Bebout scattered seven hits in the 9-3 victory and lasted at least five innings for the ninth consecutive start.
Jordan Betts
Sophomore – 3B
Forest City Owls (Coastal Plain League)
Batting Stats: 40 games, .201 AVG (27-for-134), 5 doubles, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 17 R
Betts reached base safely in all five games last week, extended his on base streak to nine games. Duke’s starting third baseman as a freshman, Betts drew five walks last week and had multiple hits in his last two outings. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-6 win on Saturday and followed by going 2-for-5 with three runs on Sunday.
Jeff Kremer
Junior – C/1B

Batting Stats: 34 games, .198 AVG (18-for-91), 8 doubles, 2 triples, 9 RBI, 13 R, 16 BB, .333 OBP
Kremer did not play last week. Despite a .198 batting average, Kremer is among the top four on the Tobs roster with a 16 walks. He has struck out just 10 times in over 100 plate appearances.

LaBruna locked in last week and raised his batting average over 30 points with three straight multi-hit games. The Duke shortstop hit .450 for the week, going 9-for-20, and struck out just once during those five games. He had three hits in back-to-back games, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a double in a 12-8 win over Outer Banks on Thursday, and 3-for-5 with a run in a 9-3 win over Outer Banks on Friday. He went 2-for-4 on Saturday and is the only player on the Wilson roster to appear in all 47 games.
Chris Marconcini
Sophomore – OF/1B
Harrisonburg Turks (Valley League)
Batting Stats: 37 games, .284 AVG (38-for-134), 8 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 22 R, .366 OBP
Marconcini had a hit in each of his three starts last week and hit .352 for the week. He drove in three runs, scored twice and contributed a double and a triple as the Turks went 4-1 to maintain their firm hold on first place in Valley League. Marconcini, hitting primarily fifth in the Turk lineup, has been a major player in Harrisonburg’s running away with the Valley League crown with a league-best 30-11 record.
Matt Berezo
Sophomore – INF
Butler BlueSox (Prospect League)
Batting Stats: 42 games, .287 AVG (47-for-164), 5 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 26 R, 9 SB
Berezo is firmly entrenched as Butler’s leadoff batter, and with good reason as the sophomore middle infielder owns a .287 batting average and a .359 on base percentage. Berezo, who ranks among the top three on the team in nine offensive categories, including runs and stolen bases, had three multi-hit games last week. His batting average has not dropped below .280 since June 28.
Aaron Cohn
Sophomore - INF
Westhampton Aviators (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 32 games, .330 AVG (30-for-91), 4 doubles, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 16 R, 8 SB
Cohn has emerged as Westhampton’s top hitter and leads the team with a .330 batting average. His average jumped over 30 points last week as he delivered a hit in all four games, including a solo home run in an 11-6 win over Riverhead. Cohn went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base in that game and is now a perfect 8-for-8 stealing this summer.
Anthony D'Alessandro
Sophomore - OF
North Jersey Eagles (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 22 games, 136 AVG (8-for-59), 4 RBI, 6 R, 25 BB, 10-11 SB
An Atlantic Collegiate League All-Star, D’Alessandro leads the league with 25 walks and leads the Eagles with 10 stolen bases. His 25 walks are just under 25 percent of the entire team’s total, and just as many as North Jersey’s top five hitters combined.
David Putman
Senior - RHP
Quakertown Blazers (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Pitching Stats: 7 APP, 2-0, 2 saves, 4.09 ERA, 11.0 IP, 20 K, 9 BB
Putman has come on strong in the ACBL and used his plus curveball to strike out 10 batters over his last four innings of work. He has picked up wins in both of his appearances last week, including a two-inning, five-strikeout performance out of the bullpen in a 3-1 victory over Lehigh Valley. With 20 strikeouts in 11 innings, Putman is averaging 16.36 strikeouts per nine innings this summer.
Mike Rosenfeld
Sophomore - C
Westhampton Aviators (Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 30 games, .279 AVG (24-for-86), 5 doubles, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 12 R, 6 SB
Rosenfeld has been steady all summer for the Aviators with 24 hits and a .279 average in his 26 starts. He got bumped up to the two-spot in the batting order on Friday and responded by going 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI as Westhampton knocked off Riverhead 11-6. The Duke backstop has also nabbed six stolen bases without being caught this summer.
Josh Ruffin
Sophomore – RHP
Gambrills Athletics (Maryland Collegiate Baseball League)
Pitching Stats: 7 APP, 1-0, 1 save, 3.66 ERA, 19.2 IP, 11 K, 11 BB, 13 hits
Ruffin’s summer in the Maryland Collegiate Baseball has come to a close. The former Duke walk-on was one of Gambrill’s top relievers, posting a 3.66 ERA over 19.2 innings. Ruffin allowed just 13 hits, did not lose a game and threw multiple innings in five of his seven innings. He went at least three innings out of the bullpen three times.
Tito Nava

Denver Bombers (Colorado Collegiate League)
Pitching Stats: 3-1, 1 save, 2.73 ERA, 26.1 IP, 32 K, 12 BB
Along with being named a Colorado Collegiate League Mid-Season All-Star, Nava was picked for the CCBL’s Overall All-Star Team and will represent the league when they take on the 2010 NBC World Series Champion Liberal Bee Jays on July 29-30.
Ryan Munger

Rome Thunderbolts (New York Collegiate Baseball League)
Batting Stats: 20 games, .180 AVG (9-for-50), 3 doubles, 3 RBI, 6 R
Munger started three of Rome’s five games last week. He had hits in back-to-back games, including an 8- win over Oneonta in which he doubled and scored.
