Laura Weinberg has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week on Tuesday, after scoring two goals at third-ranked Wake Forest last week.DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University sophomore forward
A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Weinberg helped lead sixth-ranked Duke to victories over third-ranked Wake Forest (2-0) and 15th-ranked Maryland (3-1) on the week. The Blue Devils now own a school-record seven ACC wins on the season and is in sole possession of first place.
At third-ranked Wake Forest, Weinberg notched two second half goals on her way to leading Duke to a 2-0 victory. The goals snapped Demon Deacon goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe’s scoreless streak at 515:46, which was the second-longest streak in school history. Duke’s win also snapped an 11-game unbeaten streak for the Wake Forest.
The two goals by Weinberg marks the second time this season and third in her career with two tallies.
Weinberg came off the bench on senior day Sunday and took three shots, including two on goal as Duke won 3-1 against 15th-ranked Maryland. Weinberg now owns seven goals on the year, which ranks second on the Duke team. She has 17 goals in two years with the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils will close the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27 at N.C. State. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m., at Dail Soccer Stadium. Duke is one win away from claiming its second ACC title in school history and the first since 1994.
