Duke to Face Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals

DURHAM,N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the bracket for the 2011 ACC Championship with the sixth-ranked Duke field hockey team claiming the third seed. Duke is set to take on No. 6 seed Virginia Thursday, Nov. 3 at 3:30 p.m., in the first round of the tournament, which will be held in College Park, Md. The game will also be broadcast on

Duke (11-6, 2-3 ACC) earned two conference wins this season to grab the No. 3 seed, its highest ACC finish since the 2006 season. North Carolina (18-1, 5-0 ACC) earned the top seed and, along with No. 2 seed Maryland (15-3, 4-1 ACC), will earn a first-round bye.

The three-day tournament will begin Thursday, Nov. 3 with a 1 p.m., matchup between fourth-seeded Wake Forest (9-8, 2-3 ACC) and fifth-seeded Boston College (10-8, 2-3 ACC), followed the Duke/Virginia game. The Cavaliers defeated the Blue Devils following penalty strokes in the two teams' only meeting this year, a 3-2 decision last Sunday in the squads' final regular season game of 2011.

The winner of the Duke and Virginia contest will advance to the semifinal round and face Maryland at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, while the Boston College and Wake Forest winner will take on North Carolina at 1 p.m. The semifinal winners receive a day off before meeting Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. to determine the ACC champion.

Both semifinal games and the championship final can be seen on the league's regional sports network (RSN), which includes Fox Sports South, Fox Sports Florida, Comcast SportsNet mid-Atlantic, New England Sports Network and Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
