DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Colleen Schmidt recorded a first-place finish for the first time in her collegiate career to lead the Duke women to the team title Saturday at the Three Stripe Red Shirt Invitational at the WakeMed Cross Country Course in Cary, N.C.

Schmidt clocked 17:57 to take first in the field of 27 in the 5K women's race. Four other Blue Devils also placed inside the top 10, with sophomore Gabby Levac coming in second behind Schmidt at 18:02. As a team, Duke scored 16 points to claim the team title.

"We saw a lot of improvement from previous races," said head coach Kevin Jermyn. "Colleen was feeling pretty good about how she progressed ... It was a good developmental race."

The Blue Devil women now own an overall record of 74-19 and a mark of 6-6 in ACC action.

The Duke men finished third behind North Carolina and NC State in the 5K race, totaling 54 points. The Blue Devils placed three runners inside the top 20, with freshman Shaun Thompson leading the way in 11th place at 15:13. Sophomore Christian Britto finished 13th with a time of 15:21 and freshman Nate McClafferty took 18th with a 15:41 clocking. Junior Jonathan Sanchez recorded a mark of 15:18 to come in 12th while running unattached.

"We just went out and had a few young guys get some experience," said head coach Norm Ogilvie. "Shaun Thompson ran a solid time for a freshman. Christian Britto had one of the best cross country races of his career. It was a good outing."

The men now move to 38-15-1 overall and 8-7-1 in the ACC.

Both the men's and women's teams will travel to Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Nov. 12 for the NCAA Southeast Regional.
