DURHAM, N.C. -  Duke University freshman standout Kelly Cobb has been nominated for a United States Soccer Best of 2011 award.  A product of Chugiak, Alaska, Cobb is one of five nominees for the Young Female Athlete of the Year award.

Fans can vote online once a day at Facebook through Jan. 13 by heading to the following site.

Online votes for the Athlete of the Year awards are equivalent to 50 percent of the total votes. As in years past, the other 50 percent will be represented by votes compiled from members of the national media and U.S. Soccer representatives (from national team coaches to the National Board of Directors).

Cobb, a 5-9 forward, represented the U.S. on the U-20 National Team in 2011 and traveled to La Manga, Spain in March for the La Manga Ten Nations Tournament.  In the final match of the tournament, Cobb registered a goal and an assist to help lead the U.S. squad to a 2-0 win over Norway.  She also scored a goal against Japan and was the U-20 National Team’s leading scorer in 2011.

Other nominees for the Young Female Athlete of the Year award are Morgan Andrews, Morgan Brian, Melissa Henderson and Sydney Leroux.

As a freshman at Duke, Cobb led the Blue Devils with a rookie record 11 goals to go along with nine assists and 31 points.  She posted six game-winning goals, which was tied for the team lead.  Cobb was a Soccer America All-Freshman first team selection, NSCAA All-Region and All-ACC Second Team honoree.  She helped lead Duke to its second NCAA College Cup appearance in 2011, while posting a school-record 22 victories.

The U.S. Soccer Male and Female Athletes of the Year awards are the oldest and most prestigious awards of their kind, dating back to 1984 for the men and 1985 for the women, while the Young Male and Young Female awards were added in 1998.
