DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team will make its 2012 home debut Wednesday, Feb. 1 against Davidson College. The Blue Devils and Wildcats will wrestle at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The match will be the first of four home bouts for Duke this season.
The Blue Devils are coming off of a 29-18 victory over Bridgewater State this past weekend. Duke (1-6-0) and Davidson (0-10-0) are meeting for the 49th time overall with the Blue Devils holding a 37-11 edge in the series. Duke has won the past four matches, including a 23-18 victory in 2011. Davidson's last win over the Blue Devils was an 18-17 triumph in 2007 in Durham.
Duke redshirt senior A.J. Guardado leads the way for the Blue Devils with a 6-1 record in dual matches this season at 149 pounds. He is on a four-match win streak and owns a career-best 16-7 overall record for the year.
Freshman Tanner Hough also has wrestled well lately, winning his previous three bouts to improve to 5-2 in dual matches. The 141-pounder owns a team-high 18 wins for the year and has seven pins. Redshirt junior Diego Bencomo looks to continue his four-match win streak in the 184-pound division after he posted three wins this past week.
At 165 pounds Ryan Harding captured a pair of victories last week to move to 3-3 for the season in dual matches, while Brian Self hopes to continue his recent win streak at 197 pounds. Self most recently posted two victories on the road against Boston University and Bridgewater State.
Davidson is led by Kevin Birmingham with a 10-10 record at 149 pounds. Tyler Mullen is 9-7 from the 165-pound division. The Wildcats most recently lost to Tennessee-Chattanooga. Duke and Davidson share one common opponent in Campbell. Davidson fell to the Camels 39-6 in November, while Duke dropped a tough 19-17 decision last week.
The Blue Devils host Gardner-Webb in the next match, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Duke's final home matches will be against ACC rival NC State and Ohio University, Feb. 17.
