AUSTIN, Texas - Texas right fielder Mark Payton went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the 13th-ranked Longhorns to a 5-3 win over Duke in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns won the first game of the doubleheader 4-0 earlier in the day.

Duke jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. After center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, third baseman Jordan Betts doubled to left center. Two batters later, first baseman Andy Perez sent a slow roller to third to score Piwnica-Worms. Third baseman Erich Weiss's throw to first got away from Kirby Bellow on the play, allowing Betts to score from second.

Texas answered with a three-run bottom half of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Payton dropped a two-run, bases-loaded double down the left field line to score left fielder Jonathan Walsh and shortstop Christian Summers. Second baseman Brooks Marlow then drove in center fielder Tim Maitland with a sacrifice fly to left to give the Longhorns the one-run advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Longhorns pushed two runs across, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball to take a 5-2 lead.

The Blue Devils added a run in the top of the fifth to cut the Longhorn lead to 5-3. Shortstop Matt Berezo singled up the middle to start the inning. Two batters later, designated hitter Jeff Kremer singled to left. Piwnica-Worms would then reach on a fielder's choice, moving Berezo to third. Berezo would later score on a wild pitch to make it a two-run ballgame.

Duke loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with two outs but Texas freshman Parker French ended the threat by striking out Berezo.

Texas starter Hoby Milner (1-0) earned the win, holding Duke to three runs on four hits in five innings of work. French pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Longhorns, limiting the Blue Devils to just two hits. Corey Knebel picked up his second save of the day, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Duke freshman starter Trent Swart (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, four of them earned, on five hits in 3.2 innings. Swart had a pair of strikeouts but issued five walks in the loss. Sophomore righty Drew Van Orden pitched great out of the bullpen, holding the Longhorns to two hits in 4.1 shutout frames. Van Orden struck out a career-high six batters in the game.

Kremer paced Duke at the plate, going 2-for-5 on the night. Betts went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Piwnica-Worms finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Berezo added a hit and a run. Perez had an RBI and right fielder Andrew Istler added a hit for the Blue Devils.

Maitland had two hits and scored twice for Texas, while Summers scored a pair of runs and Marlow and Weiss added one RBI apiece.

Tomorrow's series finale will begin at 1 p.m. (CST). Sophomore RHP Robert Huber is slated to start for Duke against Texas RHP John Curtiss on Sunday.
