COLLEGE PARK, Md.-Fifth-ranked Maryland jumped out a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game and held off No. 10 Duke to earn a 10-7 victory in ACC men's lacrosse action at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium this afternoon. Josh Dionne led all Blue Devils with three goals in the contest.

Duke (3-2) trailed by as many as six in the third quarter before outscoring Maryland 3-1 in the final stanza to pull within three. The Blue Devils outshot the Terrapins 25-6 in the second half and outscored them 5-3, but could not overcome the five-goal halftime deficit.

Dionne netted his second hat trick of the season, while Justin Turri had two goals and Robert Rotanz had two assists. Turri is just five points shy of reaching the 100-career points mark. He owns 56 goals and 39 assists in his career for 95 points.

Maryland (3-0) was led by Drew Snider's three goals, while Billy Gribbin had a goal and two assists. The Terrapins got goals from eight different players, including five different scorers on the first five goals.

"That first 10 minutes give Maryland credit they shot the ball great and they were on fire," head coach John Danowski said. "We just seemed to be quiet and seemed to be very passive. We called a timeout and said 'Hey listen, if this keeps going it's going to be 32-0, so relax.' And at some point it became a game again. Our guys did relax and did play. And it was a game."

The Terrapins scored four goals on its first seven shots of the game in the opening 7:28 of the game. Snider netted the first score just 59 seconds into the contest before Kevin Cooper added one 55 seconds later. Owen Blye and Joe Cummings rounded out the scorers to start the game.

Coming out of the timeout after being down 4-0 early, Duke quickly got on the scoreboard with a strike from Turri. Duke won the faceoff and Rotanz took the ball down the field and fed Turri for his fourth goal of the year to make it a 4-1 game.

The Terrapins added three of the next four goals of the contest to take a 7-2 lead into halftime. Walsh was Duke's lone goal scorer in the second quarter as he took the ball around the cage and snuck his shot past Niko Amato. The Maryland goaltender finished with 14 saves on the afternoon, including 10 in the second half.

In the second half, Duke put the first goal on the scoreboard to make it 7-3, but Maryland answered again with consecutive scores to take its largest lead of the game at 9-3. The Blue Devils continued to shoot and found the cage four more times, but ran out of time in the end to fall 10-7.

CJ Costabile added his third goal of the year to go with a solid day at the faceoff X. Costabile won 10-of-18 draws and picked up six ground balls.

Overall Duke outshot Maryland 40-28 and edged the Terrapins in ground balls 28-27. The Blue Devils won 11-of-20 faceoffs for the game. In goal, freshman Kyle Turri made eight saves with six of those coming in the first half.

"I think our team learned a little bit about themselves today," Danowski said. "We took 40 shots and won 11 out of 20 faceoffs. The ground ball game was even. We did a lot of hustle athletic things, we just didn't do enough lacrosse things so we need to become better lacrosse players, a better lacrosse offense. Those are the things we can work on. All of the hustle and the desire, that was all there."

"I was happy with the way we cleared the ball," Danowski said. "I was happy with the faceoff X. I was happy with our team's effort and not giving up. But we just weren't poised for 60 minutes."
