Big Second Quarter Puts Duke Past Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Duke University senior midfielder Robert Rotanz netted four goals  to lead the 10th-ranked Blue Devils to a 13-11 victory over No. 18 Georgetown in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Multi Sport Field. The win is the first for the Blue Devils on the road this season.

Duke improves to 7-3 overall and pushes its win streak to four games, while Georgetown falls to 4-3 on the year. Sophomore attackman Jordan Wolf added two goals and two assists for four points. He has 21 points overall in the previous four games. Christian Walsh and Josh Offit also added two tallies for Duke. Rotanz has four goals in three games this year and in each of the past two games.

After dueling to a 3-3 tie after 15 minutes of play, the Blue Devils fired on all cylinders in the second quarter with a 5-0 run to lead 8-3 at halftime. Duke stymied the Georgetown attack, holding the Hoyas to just one shot in over 14 minutes of action and two shots for the quarter. It marked the third time all season Duke has held an opponent scoreless in a quarter.

Rotanz started Duke's run at the 11:44 mark of the second session and the Blue Devils added two more goals in the next 1:12 for its largest lead of the game 6-3. Duke put up two more goals in just over a minute from Offit and Rotanz for the five-goal lead. All five of Duke's goals came in 4:43.

The Blue Devils extended the streak to 7-0 with two goals to start the third quarter before the Hoyas stopped their scoring drought with a goal at 11:15 of the frame to make it 9-4. The 19:33 scoring drought by Georgetown was the fourth longest of the year for Duke.

Duke and Georgetown traded goals in the final 11 minutes of the third quarter with the Blue Devils scoring twice in the final three minutes to go into the fourth quarter with a 13-6 advantage.

The Hoyas turned the tables on Duke in the fourth quarter, scoring five unanswered to pull within two. Georgetown got goals from five different players as it outshot the Blue Devils 15-4 and held them scoreless for the final 16:42 of the contest.

Travis Comeau led the Hoyas in goal scoring with three, while Francis McDonough had two goals and two assists for four points.

Duke sophomore Brendan Fowler handled faceoff duties for Duke, winning 13-of-23 restarts. CJ Costabile had a game-high five ground balls for Duke.

Overall for the game, Duke held a narrow 33-32 edge in shots and won the ground ball battle 27-26. In goal, junior Dan Wigrizer made nine saves. Matt Winter had eight saves for the Hoyas.

Duke will play the first of its final two home games on Tuesday, March 27 against Brown. The Blue Devils and Bears face off at 3 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
