SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Duke's top boat will advance to the Grand Final of the San Diego Crew Classic after finishing first on Saturday afternoon in the varsity eight.
The crew of coxswain Caroline Kiritsy, Kathy Smithwick, Katie Burke, Emily Theys, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy and Claire Vannelli will have a chance to win the Sea World Cup on Sunday after posting a time of 6:48.95 in the seven-boat competition. USD finished six seconds behind the Blue Devils with Gonzaga rounding out the top three with a time of 6:57.475.
In the second varsity, the Blue Devils finished fifth with a time of 7:13.34. The group of Sarah Baker, Brielle Batesko, Tori Arendt, Breanna Briede, Lauren Lashmet, Sophia Blair, Julie Rohde, Laura Guth and Sydney Johnson fell to No.1 Virginia who won the race two seconds ahead of No. 8 Washington (6:54.20).
The varsity four including Ashleigh Anne McKinney, Allison Beattie, Elizabeth Howell, Nancy McKinstry and Lissa Glynn came from fifth place at the 1000 meter mark to move up and sprint their way to third, just 1.5 seconds behind Stanford (7:48.03). USC finished with a time of 7:37.27 to win the race.
