SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Duke rowing team's varsity eight entry won the Sea World Cal Cup in the Grand Final of the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday afternoon on Mission Bay.
After finishing in first place on Saturday to advance to the Grand Final, the crew of coxswain Caroline Kiritsy, Kathy Smithwick, Katie Burke, Emily Theys, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy and Claire Vannelli posted a time of 7:08.47 to beat second place Oregon State by two seconds.
Oklahoma crossed the finish line at 7:15.86 to finish in third with USD (7:21.69), Tulsa (7:22.09) and Iowa (7:22.37) rounding out the race.
"This was an exciting weekend for our program and the varsity eight in particular," said head coach Robyn Horner. "We knew the University of Oklahoma and Oregon State would challenge us all the way down the course. The women executed very well in the rough water conditions. The final sprint with 300m to go was aggresive and decisive."
