DURHAM, N.C.- The Duke rowing squad is preparing for its next competition at the Knecht Cup in Camden N.J., on April 14-15. Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior rower Kathy Smithwick to learn more about the Louisville, Ky., native.
GoDuke.com: What do you have DVR’d?
Kathy Smithwick: I have “Vampire
Diaries,” “Once Upon A Time,” “Board Walk Empire,” “True Blood,” and “Dance
Moms” is my new favorite reality show.
GoDuke.com: What embarrassing music do you
have on your iPod?
KS: “I
guess it might be embarrassing for some, but I have every Disney song ever and
I listen to them all the time.”
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite movie?
KS: “Forest
Gump and Gladiator.”
GoDuke.com: Do you have any
superstitions/pre-game rituals? If so, what are they?
KS: “My
superstitions change every time. If I lose then I lose the pre-game ritual.”
GoDuke.com: What’s on your bucket list?
KS: “I
guess time travel, but that’s kind of impossible, I would love to go back in
time! I would love to horseback ride and win a Grand Prix, that would be fun.”
GoDuke.com: What’s the biggest obstacle
you’ve had to overcome?
KS: “I
think learning patience and being very patient. Things have really come together this senior year, but to get
there where we have 40 girls on the team and we’re competitive. It has been a very long process. Freshman and
sophomore year I was like why can’t we do this now, but realizing it’s a longer
process. It’s exciting.”
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite home
cooked meal?
KS: “Anything
on the grill is really great, whether it be shish kabob, steak, or chicken.”
GoDuke.com: Describe Coach Horner in one
word.
KS:
“There really is not one word to describe Robyn. I can’t really limit it to one
word. She is a multifaceted person.”
GoDuke.com: Can you cook? If so what are
you good at?
KS: “I
can cook, I haven’t perfected my grilling skills, however I make a very good
jambalaya and a very delicious taco dish.
I can handle myself in the kitchen.”
GoDuke.com: Who would you trade places with
for a day?
KS: “I
would like to be any NCAA basketball player. I’m from Kentucky so basketball is a big deal,
but I was never good enough, so I think it would be fun.”
GoDuke.com: Fill in the blank -- I wish I
knew how to _________
KS: “I
wish I was fluent in Spanish.”
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite
restaurant in Durham?
KS:
“I
like Tobacco Road and Bull City Burgers and The Q Shack.”
