DURHAM, N.C. - Twenty-one members of the Duke track and field squad are set to compete in the NCAA First Round on May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla. Eleven women and ten men qualified for the three day event hosted by the University of North Florida. This event is the final stepping stone and qualification round for the NCAA Championships on June 6-9.

Sophomores Michael Krone, Tanner Anderson and Michelle Anumba all earned top 10 marks in the NCAA in their respective events.  Men's high jumping duo Krone and Anderson have consistently progressed throughout the outdoor season with Krone finishing first at the ACC Championships by clearing a personal record 7-3.75(2.23) and Anderson earning a second place finish with a clearance of 7-3.00 (2.21).

Anumba is ranked in the top ten nationally in the women's shot put.  The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native earned a first place finish during the indoor and outdoor seasons in addition to second team All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships.  Anumba also qualified to compete in the women's hammer throw during the weekend.

Including Krone, Anderson and Anumba, 14 out of the 23 Blue Devils are veterans to NCAA regional competition.  Senior Michael Barbas will make his third appearance in the men's shot put while Andrew Brodeur will compete in the 10,000 meters in his second appearance.  Sophomore Curtis Beach, the 2012 NCAA indoor heptathlon champion and 2011 NCAA outdoor decathlon runner-up, is set to compete in the 800 and long jump.  The Albuquerque, N.M., native is forgoing his usual multi-events in order to compete in the two open events.

The women veterans consist of 2011 NCAA 10,000 meter champion junior Juliet Bottorff in the women's 10,000m. Senior Amy Fryt will make her third appearance in the women's pole vault while junior javelin throwers Shannon Sullivan and Andrea Hopkins will be competing for the second and third time, respectively.  Sophomore Madeline Morgan will race in the regional 5,000 for the second time while senior All-American Cydney Ross will make her third appearance in the 800.

Duke is hoping to match or better its performance from last year where 10 Blue Devils qualified the NCAA championship in Des Moines, Iowa.  Five of the 10 athletes are competing this weekend including Beach, Bottorff, Hopkins, Ross and Sullivan.

Several Blue Devils will be competing for the first time in NCAA regional competition including freshman Abby Farley who will join Ross in the 800, former field hockey player Megan Deakins in the 10,000 and freshman Carolyn Baskir in the 1,500.  Rookie male competitors include sophomore Justin Amezquita in the pole vault, sophomore Austin Carpenter and freshman Thomas Lang in the men's javelin throw and freshman Morgan Pearson in the 5,000 and freshman Shaun Thompson in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Both senior Carly Seymour and sophomore Domenick DeMatteo qualified for this weekends regional event but have been forced to withdraw due to injury.
