DURHAM, N.C. - Stefanie Fee, a 2012 Duke graduate, has been named to the 2012 U.S. National Squad, as announced by head coach Lee Bodimeade at the conclusion of the Women's National Championship in College Park, Md.

The Virginia Beach native, reflected on the moment when she was told at the end of the tournament.

"After our game, I was walking to go hit the locker room and I walked by Lee [Bodimeade] and he pulled me aside," Fee recalled.  "My heart started pounding and I had no idea what to expect.  He told me that I had been selected to the 2012-13 National Squad and shook my hand.  I was pretty much shocked and ecstatic.   I don't remember anything he said after that point."

Fee was one of four athletes selected out of the 84 from across the nation that participated in the eight-day event.  During the tournament, athletes competed in five matches as the U.S. Women's coaching staff, led by Bodimeade, evaluated the field.

"Stephanie Fee has proven to us, again, that she has been able to elevate her game and warrants selection in the National Squad," commented Bodimeade.

The four newly named players will join the 23 returning players already on the roster.  From this group, sixteen will be named to the 2012 Olympic squad later today.

Duke head coach, and former U.S. national team member, Pam Bustin was not surprised by Fee's selection to the National Team.

"I am extremely proud and not at all surprised at Stefanie's selection to the U.S. national team," Bustin commented.   "Stef has a genuine love for the game, respect for this level of training and competition, and an unmatched work ethic.  Similar to her amazing contribution at Duke, there is no doubt that Stef, with continued improvement, will have a great impact on our U.S. team. I, along with the entire Duke field hockey family congratulate Stef Fee!"

Fee is still finalizing what her next steps are in this new chapter but she is excited to join the squad after the Olympics.

"I think the most exciting thing about it is that I get to be on a team again," Fee commented.  "I of course will always have my Duke field hockey family but when your four years is up, even when I was training this spring as a senior, I knew it wasn't my team anymore.  Even though they are always going to be my family, it wasn't my team.  It's nice to know that I will be able to embark on a new journey with a new family and new team and work after a goal together.  It is also a bigger motivation to keep working hard and push my body to a whole new level and begin working on some new field hockey skills."
