DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior right-hander Marcus Stroman was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s All-America Team, as announced by the organization on Wednesday. Stroman earned Third Team All-America honors.

This is the second All-America citation for Stroman this season. Stroman earned Second Team All-America accolades from Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s Louisville Slugger All-America Team on May 31.

Stroman is the ninth Blue Devil to earn All-America honors and the first since Vaughn Schill in 1999.

Stroman was drafted with the 22nd overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on June 4, becoming Duke’s first-ever first round pick in school history.

Stroman, who was also named to the All-ACC First Team, led all NCAA pitchers in strikeouts with 136 and finished second in strikeouts per nine innings (12.49). Stroman went 6-5 with a 2.39 ERA in 14 starts this season.

Stroman, a native of Medford, N.Y., ranked first in the ACC in innings pitched (98.0), fifth in ERA (2.39) and 10th in opponent batting average (.231). In ACC games only, Stroman finished first in innings pitched (76.0), first in strikeouts (99), first in strikeouts per nine innings (11.72) and 10th in ERA (2.49).

Stroman’s 136 strikeouts in 2012 are the fifth-most in a single season in Duke history. His 136 Ks compared to just 26 walks gave him a 5.23 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year. In his 10 ACC starts, Stroman had 99 strikeouts against 18 walks.

Stroman’s 290 career strikeouts put him at fourth on Duke’s all-time strikeouts list.

Stroman’s 2.39 ERA is the sixth-lowest in a single season in the aluminum bat era (since 1974) in Duke history. His 3.27 career ERA is the second-lowest in school history in the aluminum bat era and the sixth-lowest all-time.
