DURHAM, N.C. - Duke rising senior Tim Gornik posted a 70-71=141 (-1) to reach match play at the 2012 British Amateur. He went on to post a match play victory in the opening round before falling in the round of 32 at Royal Troon GC in Troon, England.

Gornik posted a one-under 70 in his opening round at Royal Troon GC (par 71, 7,181 yards). He suffered a pair of bogeys (No. 2 and No. 4) early in the day before ripping off four straight birdies (No. 5-8) to get to two-under at the turn. Gornik went out with six pars, two bogeys and a birdie on the par 5 16th hole to cap off the under-par round.

In the second round of play, Gornik fired an even-par 71 at Glasgow-Gailes Links (par 71, 6,907 yards). He carded 12 pars, three birdies and three bogeys to advance on to match play.

The rising Duke senior opened match play in the round of 64 with a 1-up win over Jason Shufflebotham. The two players traded holes with birdies early on in the day an entered the back nine all square. Gornik ran into trouble on No. 11 and No. 12 and was 2-down with five holes remaining. He won No. 14 and squared the match after making a difficult up and down from 40-yards out in the deep rough on No. 15. Gornik grabbed the lead with a two-putt par on No. 17 and matched Shufflebotham on No. 18 to advance.

With conditions taking a drastic turn to 40 degree weather with heavy winds and rain, Gornik fell to Matthias Schwab of Austria 1-up in the round of 32. Schwab grabbed the lead on No. 1 only to have Gornik win No. 2 with a par. After falling behind on No. 5, Gornik added a birdie on No. 6 to square the match. He added a birdie win on No. 8 and a par win on No. 9 to make the turn at 2-up. Gornik suffered bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12 to fall back to all-square. Both players birdied No. 13 before Gornik regained the lead on No. 15. Schwab countered with a birdie on No. 16 and both players parred No. 17 to send the match to No. 18 all tied up. An errant drive put Gornik in a difficult spot and forced him to lay-up to 80-yards, while Schwab found the green in regulation. The Duke rising senior recovered with outstanding wedge shot to five feet only to see Schwab sink a 25-foot birdie putt for the win.

"All in all it was a great tournament for me," said Gornik. "I played great to get to the match play stage and then fell just short in the round of 32. It's always disappointing when you get knocked out in match play, but there's also a lot of positives I can take away from this week. My putting was a lot better than in the recent tournaments and my wedge play improved a lot and that's definitely something I can take to the tournament next week"

Gornik will compete in the English Stroke Play Championship (the Brabazon trophy) at Walton Heath Golf Club from June 28 - July 1.
