Duke Drops Fairfield to Start Season 2-0

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke volleyball team held Fairfield to .092 hitting as the Blue Devils defeated the Stags 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) Saturday morning in their second game of the Duke Invitataional. Duke improves to 2-0, while Fairfield drops to 0-2.

The Blue Devils were led by middle blocker Chelsea Cook (Overland Park, Kan.) with 11 kills and four blocks. Fellow middle blocker Christiana Gray (Carmel, Ind.) posted eight kills on 15 attacks, while outside hitters Emily Sklar (San Jose, Calif.) and Elizabeth Campbell (Parker, Colo.) chipped in with six each.

Duke began the day with a 9-1 run, led by three kills from Cook, to start the first set against Fairfield. The Blue Devils maintained a double digit lead for the majority of the first set and polished off the game with a kill from Campbell. Sophomore outside hitter Jeme Obeime (Carmel, Ind.)  connected on all four of her attacks in the set and would go on to finish the match with nine kills in all.

The Blue Devils again staked a comfortable lead to start the second game, building a 10-5 cushion following a Gray kill. Fairfield closed the gap down the stretch, but Duke held on to its five-point lead and ended the set with another Gray kill, her fourth of the game.

After building yet another early lead, Duke polished off the match with a 25-20 decision in the third set, led by three kills each from Obeime, Cook and Campbell.

Duke's defense put together a strong performance in the morning match, limiting Fairfield to a .092 hitting percentage. Middle blockers Gray and Cook posted four blocks each, while libero Ali McCurdy (Tampa, Fla.) led the team with 14 digs, followed by Sklar with 10.

Duke wraps up its annual tournament tonight, taking on UW-Milwaukee in the sixth and final match of the Duke Invitational. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
