CARY, N.C. – Eight representatives of the Duke men’s tennis team will begin play at the ITA Carolina Regionals on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. Overall, the Blue Devils will have six seeded players in singles and three more seeded doubles pairs in the field.

"The ITA Regional Championships is one of the highlights of our fall every year, and we are looking forward to co-hosting the event at the Cary Tennis Park,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “Historically we have done well at the regional championships, and we have a lot of players who have the ability to make a deep run in the tournament this year."

In the singles draw, top-ranked senior Henrique Cunha will receive a bye in the first round. In the second round, the Jaú, Brazil, native will play the winner of the match between Kczstof Kwasniewicz of UNC Charlotte and John Schmitt of East Carolina. Sophomore Jason Tahir will also receive a bye in the first round, and will face the winner of the contest between Randy Philips of UNC Greensboro and Alon Fairman of College of Charleston.

Freshman Daniel McCall will face Stuart Depaolo of UNC in the first round of action, while fellow freshman Michael Redlicki, the top-ranked newcomer in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason rankings, will battle Ted Nilsson of Coastal Carolina.

After competing in the finals at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational last weekend, junior Fred Saba will take on Elon’s Carlos Arboleda in the first round. Freshman Josh Levine will also be in action in the first round of play, competing against Oystein Steriro of North Carolina.

Sophomore Raphael Hemmeler, the sixth-seeded player in the tournament, will receive a bye in the first round, and will play either Nicholas Soriano of ECU or NC State’s Ivan Sanchez. As the No. 2 seed, junior Chris Mengel will receive an automatic bid to the second round, where he will take on the winner of the match between Andrew McKinnon of Appalachian State and Clemson’s Ayrton Wibowo.

In the doubles draw, the Blue Devils will be represented by three seeded teams in the tournament. Cunha and Hemmeler, the top-seeded team in the draw, will receive a first round bye. Also receiving first-round byes for the Blue Devils are the sixth-seeded duo of Michael Redlicki and Jason Tahir, as well as the second-seeded pair of Mengel and Saba.

The lone Duke pair scheduled to compete in the first round of doubles will be the freshmen tandem of McCall and Levine, who will battle the Davidson’s Chris Mark and Kevin Moore in the first round.

The tournament will be played from Oct. 18-22, with the first and second rounds of singles scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Doubles play will begin on Friday, Oct. 19 with the first round scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
