ORLANDO, Fla. – Six representatives of the Duke men’s tennis team are set to begin play at the United States Tennis Association Clay Court Invitational at Disney on Friday. The tournament, which is hosted by Florida State, will be played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

“We are happy to be in the inaugural USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “It is a unique event that combines some of the best players in college with some of the best junior players in the country. I think it is a great opportunity for the six guys we have competing this weekend.”

Junior Chris Mengel, the 19th-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason rankings, will be headlining the gold singles draw as the top-seeded player and will face Florida’s Billy Federhofer in Friday’s opening round. Eighth-seeded Fred Saba, who owns nine singles victories for the fall campaign, will face USTA junior Deiton Baughman. Michael Redlicki, the top-ranked freshman in the ITA preseason rankings, will face USTA junior Roy Lederman, while sophomore Jason Tahir will go up against Penn State’s Bryan Welnetz in the opening round.

In the garnet singles draw, freshman Josh Levine will take on Eduardo Segura of Georgia Tech, while fellow rookie Daniel McCall will face USTA junior Ryan Smith in the first round in the spear singles draw.

In the gold doubles draw, Mengel and Saba, the 15th-ranked duo in the ITA preseason rankings, will play USTA juniors Martin Redlicki, the younger brother of Blue Devil freshman Michael Redlicki, and Deiton Baughman in the first round. Redlicki and Tahir will face 28th-ranked Russell Bader and Roman Trkulja of Penn State, while in the spear doubles draw, the freshmen team of Levine and McCall will face USTA juniors Smith and Chase Perez-Blanco.

Two rounds of singles in the gold draw and one round of singles in the garnet and spear draws are set to be played Friday, while one round of doubles will begin at 8 a.m.
