Cassie Pecht has been named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Rookie of the Year, after registering an NCAA-best 15 assists on the season. She became the first national freshman of the year selection in Duke’s history.DURHAM, N.C.- Blue Devil freshman
TopDrawerSoccer also released its Team of the Season with junior forward Laura Weinberg selected to the second team.
Pecht, who is a product of Mechanicsburg, Pa., started all 23 matches for Duke and guided the Blue Devils into the NCAA Elite Eight for the second straight year and the fourth time out of the last six years. She registered six goals, 15 assists and a total of 27 points in her rookie campaign.
In the Duke single-season freshman charts, Pecht’s 15 assists was a new record, while her 27 points tied for second. Her 15 assists was also the second-most in Duke’s overall history. Pecht, who played both at the forward and midfield slots, scored or assisted in 15 of the Blue Devils’ 23 matches this season.
Pecht was also named the ACC Rookie of the Year this season, becoming just the third Blue Devil to receive the honor.
A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Weinberg earned second team honors after registering 16 goals, 12 assists and a school-record 44 points on the year. Her 16 goals were tied for a team high and was a career high, while ranking tied for second on Duke’s single-season chart.
Weinberg also notched five game-winning goals and registered eight of her 16 goals against ACC opponents. Over her career, Weinberg has scored 34 goals and posted 86 points to rank tied for fourth and fifth, respectively, on Duke’s career lists. The forward was a first team All-ACC selection this season.
Duke (15-6-2) had its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss at No. 1 seeded Penn State over the weekend.
