DURHAM -- Sarah Baker, senior on the rowing team, and Britney Balser, sophomore on the volleyball team, took their first year ACTION group on a study break to climb the Duke Chapel this past Wednesday of finals week. Both Sarah and Brittney thought climbing the Duke chapel would be a great way for their group to get to know each other better outside of the FYA ACTION Program, as well as be a much needed study break for those who were still on campus for finals.
The First Year ACTION Program meets 7 times throughout the year and is multifaceted in helping first-year student athletes effectively lead themselves during this transition year at Duke. All first year student athletes participate in this year long program that utilizes workshops, guest speakers, self-reflection and small group discussion. Each small group is lead by upperclassman student athlete mentors.
The mentors of each small group are encouraged to meet up with their group outside of their meetings either one-on-one or through a fun activity. Sarah and Brittney chose to climb the Duke Chapel. This was the first time most people in their group had the opportunity to climb the Duke Chapel and is something most Duke students say is a “must” before they graduate.
