MIAMI, FLA -- Alexander Matlari, a 2012 signee for head coach Jamie Green and the Duke Blue Devils, claimed the Doral-Publix Junior Golf Classic at the DOral Golf Resort and Spa with a two-under 213.
Matlari opened with a four-under 68 to grab the opening round lead at the event. He followed up with rounds of 75 and 70 to secure the tournament victory by two shots over Danny Guise of Greenwich, Conn.
Matlari had an oustanding fall season, including a second-place finish at the European Men's Club Trophy at Minthis Hills in Cyprus. Matlari, a native of Heidelberg, Germany, shot an 11-under par 202 (67-69-66), in the 54-hole event to earn his fifth top-five finish of the fall.
At the Schuco Open, Matlari competed against professional golfers from around the world and finished tied for third after firing a five-under par 67 in the one day event. With his performance, Matari finished better than professionals such as Ian Poulter, Martin Kaymer and Master's Champion Bubba Watson. In August, Matlari won the title at the Harder Jr. Masters after carding three under-par rounds of 67-70-66. His solid play has earned Matlari a place on the German Amateur Golf National Team, which includes the top five amateurs in Germany.
