EFLAND, N.C. -- The Student Athlete Development Leadership Program took a group of 29 sophomore student athletes from fall sports to the Sophomore Outdoor Leadership Experience [S.O.L.E.] this past weekend.  Sophomore student athletes from Football, Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Volleyball participated in S.O.L.E.  This was the second S.O.L.E. program this year, with the first S.O.L.E. program occurring this past August with sophomore student-athletes across winter and spring sports.  The program was started in Fall 2011 and has been a huge success.

The event was an overnight retreat at Camp Chestnut Ridge in nearby Efland, NC for sophomore student-athletes.  The focus of S.O.L.E. was to help student-athletes explore and understand leadership in various capacities through activities, both individual and in groups, which challenged their comfort zones.  These activities included high and low ropes courses, leadership development sessions, fun times by the campfire.

Leadership theories and practices were discussed and applied throughout the retreat activities, and student-athletes were encouraged to think of ways they could use their experiences with their respective teams.  Group sessions focused on various leadership topics, such as effective communication and team culture.

Inter-team interaction is also a primary goal of S.O.L.E.  Inter-team interaction was encouraged in the structured activities, as well as during the unstructured free time:  a campfire and “game night”.  Student athletes had some friendly competition playing Catch Phrase, Headbandz, and Apples to Apples.  Some student athletes even showed off some of their talents off the playing field by demonstrating some magic tricks.

“I got to know some great people and learned some valuable information that I think can help me personally and our football team," said football student-athlete Cody Robinson. "It was an awesome experience.”

Overall, the event was a huge success.
