Wrestlers Make Home Debut Wednesday

DURHAM, N.C.-After spending many hours on the road for the first half of the season, the Duke University wrestling team makes its home debut Wednesday night against Appalachian State. The Blue Devils and Mountaineers get underway at 7 p.m., in Card Gymnasium.

Duke vs. Appalachian State Match Details

For the first time in recent memory the Duke wrestling squad will compete in Card Gymnasium. Located adjacent to Cameron Indoor Stadium, Card will be home for the Blue Devils this season. Live scoring of the match will be available at GoDuke.com for those who are unable to attend. Fans also can follow along on Twitter for live commentary throughout the match.

Duke vs. Appalachian State Series History

The Blue Devils and Mountaineers will be meeting for the 17th time and for the second consecutive season. Appalachian State leads the series 12-4 and earned a 29-6 victory at home last season. Duke last defeated the Mountaineers in 2009 with a 22-18 victory at the Gardner-Webb Duals.

Scouting Duke

Duke enters the midweek bout after going 1-1 in a pair of duals over the weekend. The Blue Devils are 2-5 overall and most recently defeated VMI 22-15. Garnering wins for Duke were Peter Terrezza (125), Brandon Gambucci (133), Tanner Hough (141), Trey Adamson (174), Michael Chapman (197) and Brian Self (285) with Adamson's major decision clinching the win over VMI. Gambucci is 9-3 overall and 4-2 in duals, while Hough and Adamson both have double digit wins with 12 and 10, respectively.

Scouting Appalachian State

The Mountaineers come to Durham sporting a 6-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in road duals this season. Appalachian State recently fell to The Citadel 25-13 this past Friday after edging Campbell 16-15 in a midweek bout. Duke is the first of two ACC squads the Mountaineers will face this season, with No. 11 Virginia in Feb. 9. Redshirt sophomore Dominic Parisi tops Appalachian State with a 21-8 mark at 125 pounds, while redshirt freshman Zack Strickland is 19-9 for the year at 165 pounds. Overall, five wrestlers in the probable lineup for Appalachian have double digit wins.

Self Performing Well at Heavyweight

Despite wrestling much of the season at 197 pounds, Duke junior Brian Self has fared well at heavyweight in four matches. Self is 2-2 overall when moving up a weight class, including a hard-fought 3-2 overtime victory at VMI. The Oklahoma City native narrowly lost to Virginia's Derek Papagianopoulos the following afternoon, 5-2.

Chapman's First

Duke redshirt freshman Michael Chapman made his debut in the starting lineup this past weekend at 197 pounds. The Duluth, Ga., native defeated Urayoan Garcia of VMI 6-4 in sudden victory overtime to post his first dual win of his career. Chapman is 1-3 overall this season.

In Common

Both Duke and Appalachian State competed at the Hokie Open, Keystone Classic, and the Southern Scuffle this season. The Blue Devils took seventh at the Keystone Classic, while the Mountaineers took 12th overall. At the prestigious Southern Scuffle, Duke took 16th overall with 23.5 points and Appalachian came in 18th in the 24-team field.

We Meet Again

Duke is 1-1 against wrestlers currently in the Appalachian State probable lineup ... Redshirt senior Diego Bencomo fell to Jesse Johnson by a 9-8 decision at the Keystone Classic, while junior Brian Self defeated Paul Weiss 4-2 at 197 pounds in Philadelphia.
