Wrestling Set for ACC Finale at NC State Wednesday

DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team closes out its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule Wednesday evening when it makes the short drive to NC State for a dual with the Wolfpack. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., in Reynolds Coliseum.

Series History
Duke and NC State will face each other for the 39th time since NC State started wrestling in 1975. The Wolfpack lead the all-time series 36-2 and has won the past three outings against the Blue Devils. Duke last defeated the Wolfpack in 2009, a 26-22 victory in Reynolds. Both programs will be looking for their first ACC dual win of the year.

Duke in the Rankings
Duke redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci came in at No. 27 in the second of three NCAA coaches' panel rankings recently released. Gambucci is 14-4 overall and 9-3 in duals. The Mansfield, Ohio native is coming off of a major decision and fall against The Citadel and Campbell, respectively. He leads the Blue Devils with seven pins for the year, with six of those coming in the first period. Also earning a spot in the first NCAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI) at 184 pounds is redshirt senior Diego Bencomo at No. 32. 

About Duke
Duke is coming off of a pair of heartbreakingly close losses to The Citadel and Campbell at the Carolina Duals. The Blue Devils are 7-9 overall and 0-4 in the ACC. The squad lost by a combined three points this past weekend, dropping bouts to The Citadel 19-17 and Campbell 20-19. Both matches came down to the very last bout of the afternoon. Cain is an impressive 20-8 overall, while Trey Adamson has wrestled well lately at 17-14. Prior to the Carolina Duals, Kerr-Brown had won five straight bouts and Gambucci owns a team-low four losses Bencomo has wrestled well at 197 pounds, going 3-0, while Brian Self has competed well wrestling up at heavyweight.

Scouting NC State
NC State enters its home finale with a 5-5 overall record and 0-4 mark against ACC foes. The Wolfpack is coming off of a pair of wins over Ohio Northern and Davidson this past weekend. The remaining three wins are against VMI, Campbell and Gardner-Webb. Junior Nijel Jones headlines the group with a team-high 24 wins and a No. 27 ranking at 165 pounds in the most recent NCAA coaches' panel rankings. Sam Speno, at 133 pounds, is 24th in the poll, just three spots ahead of Duke's Gambucci, while Tyler Hunt will be looking to break into the 20-win plateau with a 19-8 mark at 141.

20-Win Club
With a pair of wins this past weekend at the Carolina Duals, redshirt freshman Marcus Cain joined the 20-win club with a 20-8 overall record. Cain has won five of his previous six outings and is 11-2 in duals overall. Redshirt sophomore Immanuel Kerr-Brown also has racked up 20-plus wins with a 23-13 record. He wrested unattached in the first half of the season and is 6-6 in duals this year, including posting a pair of ACC victories.

Rematch Awaits
Duke redshirt freshman Trey Adamson and NC State's Patrick Davis will wrestle again after Adamson dispatched the Wolfpack freshman in an 8-3 decision in the Keystone Classic.

In Common
Duke and NC State share four similar non-conference opponents. The Blue Devils posted a 3-1 mark, while the Wolfpack were 4-0. The lone difference was a 2-13 win over Campbell for the Wolfpack in January, while Duke lost to the Camels 20-19.
