Chelsea Gray has been named one of the final nominees for the 14th Annual Nancy Lieberman Award, which is presented to the top collegiate point guard in women’s NCAA I basketball.DURHAM, N.C. – For the second straight year, Duke University junior
The criteria for the award are the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer, Nancy Lieberman during her career. The announcement of three finalists and one winner will be made during the NCAA Final Four weekend, which will be April 7-9, 2013.
Other final nominees include Alex Bentley (Penn State), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Angel Goodrich (Kansas), Lindsey Moore (Nebraska), Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Haley Steed (BYU).
A native of Manteca, Calif., Gray was having a standout season in 2012-13 prior to getting injured in the first half against Wake Forest on Sunday, Feb. 17. She suffered a dislocated kneecap and will miss the rest of the season. Gray was averaging 13.1 points, 5.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 steals heading into game against the Demon Deacons. She was leading the ACC in assists and steals, while ranking in the top 10 nationally as well. The 5-11 guard was having one of the best all-around seasons in Duke history.
Gray has been labeled as the best open-floor passer in the women’s game and has totaled 423 assists in only 92 games. She is on pace to become Duke’s all-time assist leader with a career average of 4.6.
The Blue Devils (24-1, 14-0 in ACC) will next host 19th-ranked Florida State on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game will be aired live on RSN-TV.
