Leading Off
• Duke (16-13, 6-6 ACC) brings season-high four-game win streak into its midweek matchup against Southern Conference opponent Davidson. The Blue Devils went 4-1 over the past week, falling to Campbell before registering a win over North Carolina A&T and a three-game sweep of Boston College.
• Junior Robert Huber threw the Blue Devis’ first complete game shutout since Tim Layden’s no-hitter against Old Dominion April 13, 2004 in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Plano, Texas, native recorded just one strikeout but only allowed three hits as he was able to get 18 fly ball outs. He allowed just two runners to reach second base and retired the final 13 batters he faced.
• Duke hit .347 as a team against Boston College as four Blue Devils -- Jeff Kremer (.667), Andy Perez (.462), Kenny Koplove (.400) and Jordan Betts (.400) -- hit .400 or better in the three-game series. That quartet combined for 20 of Duke’s 34 hits on the weekend as well as 19 runs scored and 14 RBI.
• Third baseman Jordan Betts earned Duke’s first ACC Player of the Week honor since 2008 Monday, going 8-for-16 (.500) with three doubles, one home run, 11 RBI, five runs and six walks this past week. The Wilmington, N.C., native had at least one RBI in all five games and also posted a.609 on-base percentage and a team-best .875 slugging percentage.
• Davidson is 8-18 (4-11 SoCon) overall heading into Tuesday’s contest. Conference foe Elon completed the three-game sweep of Davidson Saturday, claiming both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 8-2. The Wildcats will complete an eight-game road swing against the Blue Devils Tuesday.
• Tuesday’s game marks the 138th meeting between Duke and Davidson. The two teams first met in 1902 and have faced each other at least once in every season since 1987. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 105-30-1 and hold a 38-11 advantage when facing the Wildcats in Durham since 1936. In 2012, Davidson captured a 2-1 victory over Duke in Davidson, N.C. Duke scored the first run of the game in the fourth on a double steal of second and home, but Davidson plated two in the seventh on David Daniels’ RBI single and a bases-loaded wild pitch.
