DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke rowing team will face a stacked lineup this Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7, at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay. Duke will enter boats in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four.
The Blue Devil varsity eight won the Cal Cup at the 2012 San Diego Crew Classic, and this year is invited to compete for the Jessop Whittier Cup. Duke is just outside of the top 25 in the CRCA Coaches Poll, receiving the third-most votes (32) of any team outside of the top 20, and will have an opportunity to jump into the top 25 after competing against up to seven top-20 teams this weekend.
In the Jessop Whittier Cup, the Duke varsity eight will line up against No. 2 Cal, No. 6 USC and No. 14 Wisconsin as well as Iowa and Purdue. Powering the Duke boat will be Caroline Kiritsy (cox), Grace Cassidy, Claire Vannelli, Emily Theys, Katie Dukovich, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Alex Stonehill and Hannah Hewitt. That Saturday morning heat of that race pushes off at 9:20 a.m. with the top three finishers advancing to the Grand Final.
Duke will keep its varsity four crew together, using a group of three freshmen – Mary Wilson, Rachel Wolsfelt and Dana Lerro – along with seniors Ashleigh Anne McKinney (cox) and Sydney Johnson. That group turned in a season-best time of 7:38.20 at the Cardinal Invitational on March 17 in their third race of the year.
In the second varsity eight, Duke will use the crew of Simone Pitre (cox), Caroline Williams, Julie Rohde, Victoria Tsamis, Katie Burke, Allison Beattie, Nicole Antoine, Sophia Staal and Kaila Perez. That group will stay together for the third straight meet after logging a season-best 6:56.20 in their last race at the Cardinal Invitational.
