Duke Football Spring Game Quotes
Head Coach David Cutcliffe
“I was pleased with the number of snaps that we got – it was about right. What we did in the game was obviously put our top offense against our top defense and our backups played each other. Everybody on our team got to play, which is a real positive. From a spring training standpoint as a coach, this has been the most willing squad, not just here at Duke, that we’ve had go to work every day, so I felt like every player on our team deserved to get some fairly significant playing time."
"There was some good on both sides of the ball. Anthony [Boone] suffered a couple of turnovers, but the defense was creating a little more and that’s been a little bit of the story this spring. I thought Anthony came back and his consistency was outstanding. I think one of the things you see is this team has a lot of playmakers on offense. We lost playmakers in Conner [Vernon], Desmond [Scott] and Sean [Renfree] but we’ve got a large number of people that can make plays for us on offense. I think when we get our people back – you realize we had nine people out on the defense. Seven of those men are significant in our plans."
"I like where we’re headed. We’re building some depth. I think we can be a more energetic defense. The big thing is again, focus on why we give up big plays. But try to play defense, try to force longer drives. It’s going to be interesting film to study. We got a lot out of this game.”
On being back on the football field:
“It feels good to be back out here with my teammates and contributing any way I can.”
On the adjustment and having to sit out last fall:
“It was tough to sit out because I’m used to playing, but I did the best I could to get back on the field. I just had to keep my head up and contribute to the team from the sideline the best way I could.”
On his play today:
“I feel like I could [step up and be a leader for the team], but whatever the team needs me to do, that’s what I’m going to do.”
On progress over the course of the spring:
“It feels good to be back out here as I said earlier. And the 4-2-5 scheme after a year of having practiced it under my belt I feel like I can contribute a lot to it now.”
On the game:
“We made a lot of plays, but we left a couple plays on the field. But we executed fairly well. It’s like the 15th practice so the defense is all over a lot of plays, but for the most part I felt like our offense was very efficient, making a lot of plays. A lot of guys all over the field were making a lot of plays. We had a couple of guys step up, Anthony Nash, Max McCaffrey, Erich Schneider. All of our backs did very well hitting the holes and our linemen did a great job.”
“We knew he’s very athletic, a very fast kid. We just have to get him more reps and get him a chance to get out there and show them what he has.”
On the interceptions:
“The first one, the defense has seen that play probably about a hundred times. So he knew to jump that route. I should have went off of it and taken it and run. I should have made a better decision. The second one was a tough catch, tipped. It was a young guy so we got to get on the same page and I can make a better throw and make it easier to catch the ball. We’re looking to make tough catches here, but we’re also looking for me to make more accurate passes so they don’t have to make a tough catch.”
