TEMPE, Ariz. – In one of the most impressive showings of the 2012-13 campaign, the third-ranked Duke women’s golf team shot a season-best 10-under-par on its way to finishing second against a very challenging field at the PING/ASU Invitational, which was played at the 6,223-yard, Par 72 Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

Duke carded rounds of 280, 283 and 291 on its way to posting a season-best 54-hole total of 854.  Alabama won the team title after shooting an 11-under-par, 277, in the final round as the Tide fired a three-day total of 845.  Arizona (862), Stanford (862), Southern California (863), Arizona State (863), Texas (864), UCLA (866), Texas A&M (877) and UC Davis (879) rounded out the top 10.

"I am very happy with our play,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  “Every player shined in different ways at different times.  We let it slip away right at the end but seven-eighths of our golf was just fantastic.”

After rolling in 39 birdies over the first 36 holes, the Blue Devils totaled 10 in the final round.  The 49 birdies over the three days is a new season high for Duke.

“It was a great field," commented Brooks.  "It's good to know late in the spring that we can play against the best. We didn’t quite win but we came very close to winning.  All four of our spring tournaments have been against very good teams and three of those four were top three finishes.”

For the first time this season, Duke registered three different golfers finish in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard – senior Lindy Duncan (T5), junior Laetitia Beck (T8) and freshman Celine Boutier (T10).

Duncan, who is out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., turned in a tied for fifth finish, which was the best placement for the reigning National Player of the Year since the fall.  She carded rounds of 69, 71 and 71 for a total of 211.  On Sunday, Duncan started slow with back-to-back bogeys on the opening two holes, but responded with two consecutive birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to move back to even par.  After a bogey on the 155-yard, par three seventh hole, Duncan played the final 11 holes at two-under-par.  She finished the day with a team-best five birdies, while hitting 13 fairways, 12 greens and rolling 31 putts.

After being tied for the individual lead after each of the first two days, Beck closed with a 75 on Sunday on her way to finishing with a three-day ledger of 212, which was tied for eighth.  The 54-hole total of 212 was seven shots better than her previous season best and is the lowest for the Caesarea, Israel product since her freshman campaign.

Beck recorded 11 birdies on Friday and Saturday, but was held to just one on Sunday in the final round, which came on the 372-yard, par four eighth hole.  She hit 12 greens, nine fairways and had 33 putts on Sunday.

Alabama’s Emma Talley won the individual title with a nine-under-par, 207.

A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier totaled three straight rounds one-under-par, 71, on her way to placing tied for 10th.  It marked her second top 10 finish of the season and her 54-hole ledger of 213 was five shots better than her previous best.  Boutier kicked off her round with a birdie on the opening 350-yard, par four first hole and then collected 11 straight pars before sinking her second birdie of the day on the 315-yard, par four 13th.  She suffered her only bogey of the day on No. 16 on her way to finishing with a 71.

Junior Alejandra Cangrejo also collected a season-best three-day finish as she turned in rounds of 73, 73 and 74 for a total of 220.  Cangrejo, who is from Bogota, Colombia, held an even-par ledger through 15 holes on Sunday, but suffered two consecutive bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes as she finished with a 74.  Cangrejo notched birdies on No. 5 and No. 10 on the day.

Playing in her second straight tournament for the Blue Devils, senior Courtney Ellenbogen had her best 54-hole total of the season with rounds of 75, 71 and 77 for a score of 223, which was tied for 48th.  The Blacksburg, Va., product was held without a birdie in the final round as she had three bogeys and a double-bogey to go along with 14 pars.

Duke will next compete in the ACC Championship from April 19-21 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., where the Blue Devils are the defending champion.
