Duke Concludes Regular Season Against No. 5 NC State

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke baseball team wraps up the 2013 regular season with a three-games series against No. 5 NC State at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Game times at Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m.

Probable Pitching Matchups
Thursday: Duke: RHP Robert Huber (5-6, 4.52) vs NC State RHP Ethan Ogburn (4-3, 3.12)
Friday: Duke LHP Trent Swart (4-4, 2.43) vs NC State LHP Carlos Rodon (7-2, 3.84)
Saturday: Duke RHP Michael Matuella (4-3, 3.72) vs NC State TBA

By the Numbers
• The weekend series against NC State marks Duke’s seventh against a ranked opponent and third against a team ranked in the top 10 nationally.
• Redshirt sophomore Chris Marconcini is the only player in the ACC with eight home runs as well as eight or more stolen bases this season.
• Sophomore Trent Swart has allowed just 10 extra base hits this season, all doubles.
• Junior Jordan Betts has posted career highs five offensive categories this season: batting average (.283), hits (58), home runs (7), RBI (45) and slugging percentage (.478).
• Sophomore Andy Perez is hitting a team-beast .351 in conference games, good for eighth in the ACC. Fourteen of Perez’s 17 extra base hits on the year have come during ACC play.
• Junior Robert Huber is one of just three league pitchers with two shutouts during the 2013 campaign.
• Junior Mark Lumpa has raised his average from .180 at the midway point of the season to a team-best .317 heading into the final regular-season series against NC State.

NC State Series History
• Thursday’s game marks the 273rd meeting between Duke and NC State.
• The Wolfpack leads the all-time series 148-124-1.
• NC State has won three of the past five series against the Blue Devils.
• Duke has not lost a series a home series to NC State since the 2005 season.
•  The Wolfpack swept the Blue Devils in 2012 in Raleigh, N.C., by scores by 4-0, 8-3 and 8-7.

Duke in the ACC
• The Blue Devils are currently tied with Maryland and Wake Forest for ninth place in the overall ACC standings. Duke trails eighth-place Miami by three games.
• Duke enters the weekend with an 9-18 mark in ACC play after being swept at No. 7 Virginia this past weekend.
• Duke currently ranks ninth in the league in batting average (.280), ninth in ERA (4.10) and fourth in fielding percentage (.971).
• The Blue Devils are 344-701-5 all-time in Atlantic Coast Conference games.
• Duke holds a 653-1007-6 record against teams currently in the ACC: Boston College (11-15), Clemson (66-126), Florida State (18-74), Georgia Tech (32-84), Maryland (84-81-1), Miami (7-26), North Carolina (93-182-3), NC State (124-148), Virginia (54-98-1), Virginia Tech (27-24), Wake Forest (135-152-2).

Blue Devils vs. Ranked Opponents
• The Blue Devils own a 5-14 record against ranked opponents this season, including a 4-11 mark against ranked conference foes.
• The Blue Devils shut out No. 15 Georgia Tech twice in a three game series at Jack Coombs Field (Apr. 5-7). Duke became the first team to shut out the Yellow Jackets twice in the same series since Georgia recorded 3-0 and 5-0 wins over Georgia Tech Mar. 14 and 15, 1955.
• Duke’s series win over then-No. 24 Miami (Mar. 8-10) marked the team’s first series victory over a ranked opponent since the Blue Devils took 2-of-3 from No. 11 Clemson in 2010.
• The Blue Devils began the season with a 4-3 win at No. 13 Florida in the season opener Feb. 15.

Duke to Hold Senior Day Ceremonies Saturday
• Duke will hold its Senior Day ceremony Saturday prior to the start of the final game against NC State. The Blue Devils will honor four seniors: Chase Bebout, Jeff Kremer, Al Morris and Ryan Munger.
• All four earned their degrees this past Monday (May 13).

Lumpa’s Second-Half Surge
• Junior Mark Lumpa has been Duke’s most consistent hitter over the second-half of the season and currently leads the team in batting average (.317) and on-base percentage (.432).
• Through the first 21 games of the season, junior Mark Lumpa posted a .180 average, .305 on-base percentage and eight walks.
• Over the past 22 games, Lumpa is hitting .411 with a .517 on-base percentage and 14 walks.
• During the second half of the season, Lumpa has had at least one hit in 18 of the past 22 games, including 11 multi-hit games.

Istler Among ACC Save Leaders
• Sophomore RHP/OF Andrew Istler has served as Duke’s closer in 2013 and is currently tied for the third in the ACC with eight saves.
• Istler’s eight saves this season is the most by a Blue Devil pitcher since Alex Hassan also recorded eight in 2009.
• He is one of just six Blue Devil pitchers to record eight or more saves in a single season since the stat was first recorded in 1969.
• Istler’s 11 career saves ranks tied for fourth in program history. He is two saves short of tying the Duke career record of 13 saves held by Alex Hassan (2007-09), Vaughn Schill (1997-99) and Mark Sikorski (1984-86).

Betts Reaches 160 Consecutive Starts
• Junior Jordan Betts has started all 163 games in his Duke career with 161 starts at third base and two at shortstop.
• Betts and senior Jeff Kremer are the only two Blue Devils to start all 52 games this season.
• Betts’ streak of 162 consecutive starts is the seventh-longest active streak in the country.

Marconcini Returns in 2013
• After missing last season due to injury, redshirt sophomore Chris Marconcini has started 51 games in 2013.
• His eight home runs in 2013 surpasses his total from the 2011 campaign, a season in which he garnered Freshman All-America honors after leading the team in doubles (15), triples (6), home runs (4), RBI (39), total bases (99) and slugging percentage (.481).
• Marconcini has also provided solid defense at first base, committing just three  errors in 456 chances.

Perez Leading the Way
• Sophomore second baseman Andy Perez has enjoyed a career year in his second campaign with the Blue Devils.
• In 2013, the Roswell, Ga., native has career highs in batting average (.313), hits (62), triples (5), home runs (4), RBI (24), walks (16) and stolen bases (16).
• Perez has been especially effective in ACC games, batting .351 with six doubles, five triples and three home runs. In conference games, he ranks third in hits (39), first in triples (5), tied for third in total bases (64), tied for ninth in stolen bases (8) and ninth in slugging percentage (.577) among league players.

Devilish Defense
• The Blue Devils have committed 57 errors this season as Duke owns a .971 fielding percentage, good for fourth in the ACC.
• Over the past six seasons, Duke has earned the reputation as a strong defensive team. From 2008-10, the Blue Devils posted fielding percentages of at least .975 and led the ACC in fielding percentage in two of those campaigns.
• The Blue Devils also led the nation in fielding percentage in 2008, posting a .978 mark.

Pollard Begins First Season at Duke
• Duke head coach Chris Pollard is in his first season with the Blue Devil baseball program. Pollard has a 410-341-3 career record in his 14th season as a head coach: Duke (present), Appalachian State (2005-12) and Pfeiffer (2000-04).
• Duke’s 26 wins this season marks the most by a Blue Devil head coach in his first season at Duke in school history.
• The Blue Devils gave Pollard his 400th career win in a 7-4 victory over Boston College in game one of a Saturday doubleheader Mar 30.
