DURHAM, N.C. - Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with with senior midfielder Henry Meyer to learn more about the Newton, Mass., native.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite part of being a Duke student-athlete?
Henry Meyer: The culture it comes with – there are great people around in every sport at this school.
GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
HM: Definitely the national championship.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite spot on campus?
HM: Right outside The Loop, on the walkway.
GoDuke.com: Tell us about the first time you started playing lacrosse.
HM: I went to summer camp and the first day we had to shoot on a professional goalie. I was eight years old. I take a shot and obviously he pops it up and catches it. I turn and I’m walking back to the line and ‘BAM. Lights out.’ He threw the ball back to me as if I was going to catch it and just clocked me right in the back of the head and knocked me out. The next day I went to baseball camp and swore off lacrosse. A year later, I realized lacrosse was better for me.
GoDuke.com: What’s your favorite midnight snack?
HM: Fruit Gushers.
GoDuke.com: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? What do you want to be now?
HM: I wanted to build power plants. From the business side, I’m doing that next year.
GoDuke.com: Are there any words of wisdom you’d like to pass along to freshmen and future Blue Devils?
HM: Spend time with the older guys. You think it’s very separated by grades but it isn’t – just jump right in.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
HM: Eye black, definitely. There was one game that I didn’t wear eye black and we lost that game my freshman year. I’ve not done it since.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite class you’ve taken at Duke?
HM: EMV 130 with Lincoln Pratson. Lincoln Pratson is the man.
GoDuke.com: If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
HM: Elon Musk. He started PayPal, sold it. Started a solar panel company, sold it. Started the Tesla car company, sold it. And now started a company that shoots rockets into space and lands them back on Earth. He’s the man and he’s only 35.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite restaurant in Durham?
HM: Depends. Date night – blu. Just stuff my face – Q Shack.
