EUGENE, Ore. - Personal records fall for redshirt junior Curtis Beach and redshirt senior Cydney Ross on day one of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 5 in Eugene, Ore.  Beach finished day one in the men’s decathlon in second place with a point total of 4,383, while Ross ran a personal record time of 2:03.62 in the women’s 800 meters to automatically qualify for Friday’s final.

Beach highlighted day one of the men’s decathlon with four personal records and two first place finishes.  He sits a mere six points behind leader Jeremy Taiwo from Washington and shattered his day one point total record, which he set at the 2013 Texas Relays earlier in the season, by over 150 points.

“We knew the key for Curtis to get off to a good start,” said Duke Director of Track and Field Norm Ogilvie.  “He usually feeds off of his own excitement and so when he set a personal record in the 100 he was able to use that to have a great long jump.  A six point separation between the top two leaders is virtually a tie but there is a lot of decathlon left.  He is in a good spot psychologically and has as good of a chance as anyone to win the whole thing.”

In the 100, the first of ten events, Beach set his first personal record of the day by clocking 10.66 to finish third in his heat and overall.  Then, he used the momentum from his first performance to set a new school record in the men’s long jump, leaping a distance of 25-7.5 (7.81) on both his second and third attempts to outdistance the field and take the overall lead with 1,950 total points.

In the shot put, Beach saw improvement with each of his three throws, earning an outdoor personal best with a throw of 42-3.50 (12.89) on his third and final attempt to place 17th in the event and move to second overall with a point total of 2,611 after three events.

Beach was able to maintain his second place overall standing with another personal best mark in the men’s high jump, clearing 6-8.75 (2.05) on his third attempt.  Beach cleared three different third attempt jumps throughout the event to continue advancing and earned 850 points.

In the final event of the day, Beach led the field in the 400 with a time of 47.74, which gave him 922 points in the event and 4,383 points overall.

In the women’s 800, Ross  automatically qualified for her second NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships final by clocking a personal best 2:03.62 and finishing second in her heat.  The St. Louis, Mo., native positioned herself toward the front half of the pack at the beginning of the race and was able to hold off the competition in the final 100 meters to earn the coveted qualifying spot.  Ross will compete again Friday evening at 5:20 p.m. (PT).

“Cydney continues to look great in all of her races.  She ran really well tactically and had great closing speed to run the final 200 in 30 seconds.”

Freshman Anima Banks ran a time of 2:08.30 in her first NCAA Championships to finish sixth in her heat and 17th overall.  With the performance she closes out an outstanding rookie campaign which includes second team All-America honors earned at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and All-ACC honors in the women’s indoor and outdoor 800.

Beach will be the lone Blue Devil competing tomorrow as the decathlon will conclude with the final five events.  Competition will begin with the 110 high hurdles at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
