WAREHAM, Mass. - Following the annual Cape Cod Baseball League Frank Finn tryout, Duke sophomore Garrett Hayward has earned a spot on the Falmouth Commodores roster and joins nine Blue Devil teammates in the nation's premier collegiate summer league.
A 6-7 left-hander from Glendale, R.I., Hayward was originally set to play for the Ocean State Waves of the New England College Baseball League before working his way on to the Falmouth roster. He joins teammates Jordan Betts, Andrew Istler, Kenny Koplove, Angelo La Bruna, Chris Marconcini, Michael Matuella, Sarkis Ohanian, Mike Rosenfeld and Trent Swart in the Cape Cod League this summer.
Hayward pitched 4.2 innings for the Blue Devils this season, surrendering three earned runs on three hits for a 5.79 ERA. In six appearances during the 2013 campaign, he walked five batters and struck out three.
The Cape Cod League opens its 44-game regular season schedule Wednesday, June 12.
